New Baby Panther Chameleon

Hey guys I work at Petsmart and I am buying a brand new baby Panther Chameleon tomorrow. Any tips? Also, how do you know if it's male or female?

I'd suggest buying from a breeder here on the forum (see classifieds) before buying from a pet store. That way you'll know exactly what you're getting. Check out the all screen enclosures from DIY and get it set up before you bring him home. Make sure you have proper UV lighting and that the perch under the fixture is 6" from the bulb (5.0 reptisun). You'll also need a basking light - small 6" reflector with a 40 watt bulb. Don't handle him and keep him fed every day with proper sized crickets. Go easy on the supplements and gut load the crickets with quality food.

First tip Shhhh about working for Pet Smart.... I kid I kid Welcome to the forums!!!
Do lots of reasearch and ask questions.
Big things to learn are lighting, suppelelments, and feeder care and variety. Screen cage some fake plants and mister, and you are good togo.
As far as sexing panthers it is mostly by tail base color and pattern.

Well I live in Ottawa, Ontario and it's pretty hard to find breeders here :s there's only one I know of and they sold their last clutch of veileds :( but I am pretty sure at petsmart we purchase our animals from captive breeders :p Especially because we live up north and in such a small city (even though it's the Nation's Capital). I bought a 12x12x18 tank specifically for tropical reptiles and amphibians. And I set up everything. I'm buying the little guy/girl tomorrow. I am very excited. I have been doing research on these guys for about two months now. So hopefully I raise this Panther to be big and strong :) and yeah haha funny joke ;P But yeah thanks for welcoming me to this website and I will definitely ask lots of questions here to make sure I raise this Panther properly because it's my first chameleon.:D

It kills me to go into pet smart :( They have a lil baby jacksons in there and I can't help but look at the lil fella and feel sorry for him. He's kept in a tiny lil box on a wall of other reptiles that don't look in the best of health :(

That's cool that they have a Jackson's :O never seen one in real life. But I can assure you all the animals at my location are healthy, eat well, and we keep their habitats clean :) We clean and feed from 7am till 10am every single morning

I'm glad to hear that atleast ONE petsmart actually gives an effort for their animals. They take care of the jist of them at my pet smart but they don't have to many reptile experts in there.

People dislike Petsmart, its not because the cleanliest its like stuff like the lights being to hot burning iguanas and poor husbandry for all the animals and their pamplets are pretty misleading says stuff like veiled need constant high humidity.

I actually got offered a chameleon care pamplet at pet smart. The sales man was actually pretty cool but he didn't know squat about chameleons. He handed me the pamplet and he tried explaining it all to me (I didn't get my guy from there I was just chatting to him about them because I bought crickets from them) and he kept saying all this stuff like "Just have a container to catch the water from the dripper and than just pour it back in the dripper"

I mean come on...

Welcome to the forum and congrats on your baby to be. There have been lots of things said about petsmart here however you work there and you are willing to learn. Hopefully you will be able to take what you have learned back to your work and make your pet smart one of there stores that look after reptiles correctly. Chameleons are very delicate animals, they are fascinating to watch, very addictive, they are also high maintanance. This is a very fast forum whereby you get an almost instant answer to your queries. Please keep posting any questions you have. And good luck. I will look out for your pics tomorrow. We like pics here.:):):)

Hi and welcome to the forum :)
Can I ask what kind of tank is it? Is it some kind of vivarium or an aquarium?

cool good for you my petsmart only has veiled and jacksons =.= but i found a breeder that my uncle is friends and he is actually cheaper from what i believe is a regular price (he is selling them for 175 for panthers) and he can overnight them to you but if u still want it from petsmart you could do to check the sex *** if the tail has a small groove at the base of the tail it is most likely a boy*** hope you enjoy your first cham and welcom to the forums

I'll take some pics and post the nicest ones :D and some pics of the habitat as well so you guys can tell me what I'm doing wrong :p and thank you :D

Hi and thanks for welcoming me :D I'm very excited. I named my Panther, "Yoshi" (I don't know its sex yet :( so I went with a unisex name...kinda lol). Very friendly so far, does not like being put back in the cage. Always turns around and comes back crawling up my arm. I will definitely post up some pics tomorrow :) One question...my Panther's bars/stripes become black and pretty pronounced when in the cage. However, when I handle it, it turns light pink and the bars/stripes go away and this whiteish/baby blueish horizontal line becomes visible. Would anybody know what this means?...also i see tiny littles specs of blue around its chest and cheek area. Does this mean it is a blue nosy be...by the way, as I was typing this, I looked over at his cage on the other side of my room and I noticed his skin pigment all over the lower parts of his body has become dark. He is on one of the jungle vines (which are basically the same colour he is right now). Is he just trying to blend in with his surroundings or?....

Oops, sorry! Didn't see the 2 previews replies and I replied twice because I didn't know there was a second page :s I'm still very new to this website...but it is a terrarium 12x12x18 (I will post pics tomorrow) and thanks for the welcoming :) and what do you mean by "groove" ? Like a little hook kind of shape?
