Hi, Im a new cham keeper, I have a jackson female , age dont know, has been with me over 3 weeks now.

I had her in a glass terrarium and got all messy with water, terrible, I was gonna move her to her new screen cage today, so took her to the reptile VET today to take copro and general check up. VET Told me she looks very healthy and most probably pregnant!! Didnt buy any substrate... shes been walking on the ground for over 10 days.

Any suggestions? what substrate do I need ?? to go now to the pet store, please name a few since in my city we dont have variety.... how many inches should i put?
gonna start Reading about this.... and probably asking A LOT.

I'm not familliar with gravid jacksons since they give live birth but I'm sure someone will help you out with that here :)

You don't need any substrate, a little bit messy in a screen one I would believe. But if you want some anyway it has to be something your cham can't digest and choke on. Substrate like soil needs to be covered with stones large enough for the chameleon not to digest or moss as I use, large fused patches with no small parts that can easily get loose and eaten.

As I mentioned I am not familliar with gravid fems but its mostly not a good sign for your cham to be on the ground. I guess she has plenty of branches to climb on?

If you want more help from the members, please fill out this sheet so the experts can easly help en possibly correct something thats been missing https://www.chameleonforums.com/how-ask-help-66/

Good luck! :)

Jacksons give live birth. They don't lay eggs, so you don't need any substrate or a lay bin.

Are you very sure about your temperatures? Glass enclosures can get hot of the air isn't flowing properly. If she is walking on the floor but otherwise healthy, she may be too hot. I would move her to a screen cage ASAP since Jackson's need cooler temperatures than some other kinds of chameleons.

Make sure she has plenty of places to climb. She will want to climb high to drop her babies. They come out in a "sack" that pops when they fall. They start climbing right away, so you will want to have a separate cage and LOTS of fruit flies ready for them.

The glass cage might be good for the babies, but be very very careful with the temperature. Babies overheat and die easily. I don't want to scare you, but babies can be very hard to care for. Do you have someone to help you or know an experienced keeper who might take them?

I am scared, I am sure bout temperature, I have male Jackson same situation about cage and everything, but different Brand of thermometer and they both are same temperature.... I know no cham keepers... so its gonna be me and God, lol . I saw a great video of jdog1027 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lKTbUaOQ0aA

Im gonna try to put the cool humidifier one side and try to keep the other half of the cage dry... so they can decide where they feel confy... (but all the pipes and pvc thats expert things... cant do that)...but I said Im gonna try, seems complicated ... I hope she gives me some time ... how long is the pregnancy? omg ...

Gravid Jackson's

Jackson's give birth after a 6-9 month pregnancy. They can give birth to up to 30 babies! But they usually number in the teens. The #1 expert on Jackson's babies on this forum is "LoveReps." Search this forum for her posts. They are very detailed and I have used many of her ideas for both of my litters of Mt. Meru Dwarf Jackson's. My first batch of babies will be one year old next month. I also have a batch that were born to a different female Meru about 6 weeks ago.

My profile pic is of one of my day old Mt. Meru Jackson's chameleon. Xanth Jackson babies are about the same size and have the same appearance; there's just a lot more of them! My Meru girls each gave birth to only 5 babies each.
