New Chameleon Questions

Just wondering how it went with the vet and how your little girl is today.
I am standing in line picking up the antibiotic right now. Going to see what they gave her and double check her weight. She is doing better today. Not looking up constantly, climbed around and caught some crickets. Glad I’m getting this for her but I’m like hope it’s right….they just said she weighed 2 lbs does that sound right?

Maybe a full grown Parson’s chameleon can weigh 2 lbs, but no way a baby veiled. Not even 0.2 lbs - that would be more of a weight for an adult veiled. If you post a pic of the bottle maybe we can help make sure the dose is ok. Just cross out your personal info.

Problem is, it is already in syringes….it is Enroflaxin 22.7 mg/ml injection (they said to take the needle off)

That is Baytril and the dose should be like 0.02 ml or even less. This is the syringe for my guy’s Baytril. You can see his dose of 0.3 ml is marked off with the black line. Your little girl, assuming she’s around 20 Gm would be where I put the red…0.01 or 0.02 ml

I’m guessing the weight of your girl and I could and probably am completely off on that. As long as the dose is that minuscule, I believe it’s safe to assume they got it right. If they told you to give even anything more than 0.1 ml, I’d be concerned. Just do make sure to hydrate her well. You may want to use a dripper during the day or add an extra misting. Even just putting a small handful of ice cubes on top of the enclosure would act a a sort of dripper and help.

 It is really hard to tell, but I do know that they would have to put some air in the syringe in order to push that small of a dose out. So the dose is probably 0.01 ml, which would make sense for her size and also it looks like the total quantity they gave is 0.07 ml.

I think you’re right
Ok next question…..how in the heck am I supposed to get this medication into the chameleons mouth!?? If it won’t open it. Which it didn’t the other day. Should I try to make it mad? This is gonna be difficult lol thank you for your help. I will buy you a nice present, anything you want, if you get me through this nurse skittles!! Haha

Lol This is the hard part. The good thing about veileds is they have a little handle on top of their head - that beautiful raised casque. Make sure it is just you and your cutie in the room - no kids, cats, dogs or other distracting beings. Another adult is ok. Put a towel down on something like your bed, sofa, counter or whatever is easiest. This is for cutie to hold on to. Get everything ready and then get her out & put her on the towel. Very gently grasp her casque and lift up. This should open her mouth and then you can quickly just shoot the medicine in towards the back of her throat. Yes, she is going to get stressed and be mad. It can’t be helped and once she’s back in her enclosure, she’ll calm down. It may take a few tries to get it down and be comfortable. If you have an older child or another adult who is able to quickly shoot the med while you hold your cham, that would be even better. Since there’s so very little of the medicine, it’s important not to miss. If you could be sure that she would be eating a specific bug, you could carefully inject the medicine into that bug. I’ve never liked that technique. Here’s how I got meds into my big guy (bless his soul). Pardon my shaky hands - it was a bit of a reach for me even on my step stool (Plus carpal tunnel)

You'll have to get her angry. What my vet does when she needs to look inside my guy's mouth is run her fingers along the side of his mouth from back to front. If doing that a few times doesn't do it, she covers his nostrils and he opens right up.

While I've not had to medicate our chameleon, I am giving our bearded dragon meds for parasites and the same technique works for him.

Also, be prepared to get bit. Our chameleon got me the last time he was at the vet and she looked in his mouth and the beardie gets me every couple of days when I give him his meds (really hoping this round knocks them out so I can stop getting bit).

I’ve been having to get my panther Jack mad at me so I can give him his meds. He’s always been so super sweet and friendly, so this has been a challenge. He hates the camera on my phone though, so I’m using that.
