New Chameleon Questions

You'll have to get her angry. What my vet does when she needs to look inside my guy's mouth is run her fingers along the side of his mouth from back to front. If doing that a few times doesn't do it, she covers his nostrils and he opens right up.

While I've not had to medicate our chameleon, I am giving our bearded dragon meds for parasites and the same technique works for him.

Also, be prepared to get bit. Our chameleon got me the last time he was at the vet and she looked in his mouth and the beardie gets me every couple of days when I give him his meds (really hoping this round knocks them out so I can stop getting bit).
Thank you so much!! I’m not even good at just holding her yet….I’ve only done it one time! So this should be fun!! LOL!!

Lol This is the hard part. The good thing about veileds is they have a little handle on top of their head - that beautiful raised casque. Make sure it is just you and your cutie in the room - no kids, cats, dogs or other distracting beings. Another adult is ok. Put a towel down on something like your bed, sofa, counter or whatever is easiest. This is for cutie to hold on to. Get everything ready and then get her out & put her on the towel. Very gently grasp her casque and lift up. This should open her mouth and then you can quickly just shoot the medicine in towards the back of her throat. Yes, she is going to get stressed and be mad. It can’t be helped and once she’s back in her enclosure, she’ll calm down. It may take a few tries to get it down and be comfortable. If you have an older child or another adult who is able to quickly shoot the med while you hold your cham, that would be even better. Since there’s so very little of the medicine, it’s important not to miss. If you could be sure that she would be eating a specific bug, you could carefully inject the medicine into that bug. I’ve never liked that technique. Here’s how I got meds into my big guy (bless his soul). Pardon my shaky hands - it was a bit of a reach for me even on my step stool (Plus carpal tunnel)

I think you did absolutely amazing giving that to your big guy. My hands will shake way worse than that! Now did you use the qtip at the end to administer another med or wipe some of that one off. Will it be way for me to see the airway so that I can make sure to avoid it? I have someone here that will be doing it with me and we are starting it in the morning so that we can keep a close eye on her. We tried to get her out but she hid quickly in her plant and I didn’t have it in me to chase her out of it again. I’m such a sucker for the little cutie! First thing in the am tho. I will prob have some questions. I will try making her mad. Thanks again for all of your help. If she makes it through this, I have you to thank. I truly do. There is another woman that I met who has helped me also but I see you take your time out of your life all day everyday to help people on here just like me. I’ll never forget it….seriously. ❤️

He had mouth rot and his vet told me to wipe Listerine on his sores. It’s a completely unofficial thing and I can’t say one way or the other if it helped. It takes a bit of time to build confidence with handling. My veiled girls hissed, lunged and tried to bite at every chance (they still do) and I just learned over time. My veiled boy was shy rather than aggressive.
This may help you figure out anatomy. The red is the NO zone - the airway. Aim for the blue.

I don’t know if this pic will show it any clearer for you. You’ll probably also have a little tongue in the middle to further confuse things. Just aim for the back of the throat. I try to have their little heads pointing up in the air just for gravity to help too.

I’ve been having to give mine meds orally for a couple weeks. He had just started getting used to me and now I have to make him mad every morning! I felt awful at first, but now that I can tell it’s helping him and improving everything, I don’t feel as bad because I know it’s for the best.

I just try to make him a little angry so he will hiss at me. He holds his mouth open for a few seconds when he does this and I just shoot it at the back of his throat.

The biggest thing I’ve realized is that patience is important. It’s stressful the first few times, but we have both gotten used to it (somewhat 😅).

Ok so I weighed her on the scale I have here. It says she weighs 7.26 grams. Does that seem right?

 It is really hard to tell, but I do know that they would have to put some air in the syringe in order to push that small of a dose out. So the dose is probably 0.01 ml, which would make sense for her size and also it looks like the total quantity they gave is 0.07 ml.
Ok having a problem. I am seeing about 0.05 in each of these maybe 0.04 so now I’m super confused. Also she weighs a little over 7 grams.

What was the dose of Baytril and weight of your chameleon?

My panther weighs just under 100Gm and is getting 0.3 ml daily. I’m not sure if he is getting a high or a low dose though. With medications, there is usually a range depending on severity or type of problem being treated. For example there is a medication that the standard dose is 0.5 mg. Sometimes it’s prescribed as only 0.25 mg which is very low. For more serious symptom, the dose prescribed is 1 mg and to treat a completely different problem, the standard dose is 2 mg.

I understand completely. I really hate that they have the weight wrong, and I think she messed it up bc she put her on top of something small so she would hold on to it and then subtracted thah from the weight. She had to have messed that up somehow. I also worry that they weren’t paying attention and went by the 2 lbs on the paper. Who really knows for sure. I am worried about killing the poor thing now. And worried about it dying without the meds. She is gasping and looking up a lot more now and is starting to just look real sick.

Hopefully I got one of them right and they’ll be around. The dose was definitely calibrated for a tiny weight. Gotta get ready to start my work week once again.

The only way to clear this up is to contact the veterinarian that prescribed and filled this prescription. They may have diluted it or completely messed up but only they can actually sort this properly.
Most oral suspensions are 25 mg/ml or 50 mg/ml. There are Baytril tabs that are 22.7 mg each. If they dissolved one of those in 1 mi of liquid that might be what you have or they mixed it in more fluid and labeled it poorly. The dose range in reptiles can be 5-10 mg/kg depending on factors.
My calculations for a 5 mg/kg dose rounding her weight up to 10 grams for simplicity gives me 0.002 cc or ml you have doses of 0.04 cc or ml. If they didn't dilute it that would be 20 times as much as she needs. 0.002 would be impossible for you to dose as that would be giving just 1/5th of the smallest mark on most 1 cc syringes. They hopefully diluted it but you need to find out from them.
