i have two sulcata tortoises and they are my joys. One is 2 years old and the other is 9 months old. They are very sweet and get big quick! That is a very nice cage you have set up. Mine had to be seperated because they try to eat eachother! But your cham cage is beautiful as well. I'm going to be making one in the spring when it gets a little warmer.
thanks!! My torts will go at it occasionally, but its usually just one who will try and bite the other and then just turn around and walk away. I can't sex them 100% for sure yet, but both have signs for males and I hope that I don't have to separate them as they get older! I did run into a small gnat issue with the plants in my enclosure and I'm gonna switch the soil and see if they go away. Its not a bad problem, but I've noticed a few in the cage more recently.
I actually have let the two of mine kind of explore all day today and they seem to be doing okay. i have a big area for them but had to put plexiglass in between part of it so they wouldn't fight. I'm thinking about leaving them tonight and see how they do. I'm thinking I have a male and female honestly. I've thought they were both boys but the older one is starting to show some signs. My box turtle is having a problems with gnats but i changed everything and cleaned it all well and they have seem to kind of go away. So i'm not sure the cause of that.
Yeah, I hope I don't end up having 2 boys. I ended up switching out the soil in both of my pothos today. Both pots they were in, were apparently having draining issues cause the bottom of the soil was soaked and the top was bone dry so the gnats were living it up down below. I also put some dishsoap and water in a cup inside the cage to get out the rest of them. I'm gonna put a layer of sand over the soil as well. I haven't had a chance to post some updated pics, I ended up building a second enclosure which is 16" x 16" x 30" as I'm going to be getting a baby cham (about 3 months old). After a few months, I will switch him to his bigger cage.
Well, with Sulcatas, they don't need humidity and plants. I give them fruit and Tortoise bites. I'll take a picture of my enclosure i got set up for them tonight. I'm getting a 3 month old cham on Wednesday but he'll be on the other side of the room!
Here is a pic of the little cage I'm building for a baby cham. Its almost done, just need to put the front door on, and some minor tweaks to the inside. Thoughts...
Thanks!! I appreciate it. I should finish it up tomorrow and then I'm gonna set everything up and monitor temps/humidity to make sure everything is good.
hey just a question...what size and type of wore is that larger cage? it loks bigger then the typical wire mesh screen sold around here. I'm thinking of doin up a bigger cage myself. thanks and best of luck with your cham(s) and the great looking cages.
I actually have two different mesh on the cage. The outer layer is thin aluminum mesh screen and the inside is a plastic garden fencing. I got both at Lowes as rolls, and the garden fencing was outdoors. My main concern was keeping humidity in, so I wanted to do two layers to help and thus far it seems to have helped a little. Let me know if you have any other questions. I should post some new pics, I've updated since the last post. I finally get my cham this weekend, but I don't suspect he will be in the big cage for a few months. He is only 3.5 months old.
