Hey This is a question from my dad. Im building a cage and can I stain the wood inside or what should I do to it thats safe for my soon coming baby panther chameleon and my Jackson chameleon. They are in different cages with a divider set up with the cage im building. Should I get a misting system for both of them? I go to school all day and go away for 1 month during the summer. Is it a good Idea to get a mister?

Thanks!

by the way heres a pic of the cage!

I have to agree that the mist system makes life much much easier!!! I also stress less since I know that my guy is getting consistency. Also the everyone is right about sealing the wood, seal it, seal it again, then one more time. Then after many coats when you think it's sealed.... do it a few more times! Just remember it basically has to stand up to rainforest type conditions. Also make sure not to put your guys in it until there are no traces of any fumes as they can be harmful. Looks like your chams will have a mansion when you're done though! Good luck!

Thanks! So I should be okay Staining the wood? I'm 13 so I don't know whats sealing is. My dad was very picky about the wood and everything he only got the highest quality wood . lol. he wants it to look the best.

Yes, stain it with a penetrating stain, probably two applications. Then you want to go over the stain with a clear varnish - that's "sealing" the wood. I did 3 coats of a water-based polyurethane when I built my cage a few years back. Put the coats on very thin to avoid dripping and make sure you get into the crevices and on all the undersides. After the last coat of sealer, you'll have to wait a few weeks for everything to cure and to stop smelling before you can add your chams.

It's going to look very nice when you're done!

Edit: You only need one misting system, but buy an extra nozzle. Unfortunately, your chams have different temperature, humidity, and watering requirements. You'll have to do a lot of monitoring for your Jax to make sure he is getting what he needs.

That will be an amazing enclosure. Go with the mistking. It's a fantastic product.
