New fruit addition to the insect diet

So I have been petsitting for a family just a couple streets away from me. While on a walk with one of their dogs, I noticed some trees that were bearing fruit that looked highly edible. It's hard to explain unless you've gone foraging, certain plants just have the "I am safe, eat the fruit" vibe. Of course I looked it up, and low and behold I noticed a wonderfully safe, foraging opportunity for me just a couple streets away. They were planted by the city and are totally free to pick. In fact it seems a lot of people just think they are ornamental with how many fruit have dropped or are just sitting on the trees. Anyways, I have discovered the wonderful Strawberry Tree. It's fruit is awesome, I love it myself as do all my rodents, birds, and reptiles who eat fruit. But most importantly is it is a highly nutritious fruit and definitely something I recommend in the regular feeding routine if you can find them. Best of all, they are evergreen and often have at least a few ripe berries year round. Definitely look them up on google, and keep your eyes peeled. I live in central Cali, but apparently a lot of my family has seen them all over California. So I would be excited to see what other states may have them available to them. Don't feed unripe fruit, it causes nausea and over ripe (it takes a while for the fruit to drop) starts to ferment on the tree and will give a slight buzz if too many are eaten. But it's pretty easy to tell what's just the perfect ripeness. The Dubia have taken to them rather well ^^

Wow...beautiful tree...the fruit is so colorful. I live in central Florida and have never seen one here....do they have seeds? would love to try to grow one.

I'm curious about this now too. I'm on the line of 9b and 10a but a quick google search says they are safe for zone 7 to 10. Think I'll have to look into this one more when I have a chance.

edit: so I see 1 place, in Georgia, selling the trees or some people selling the seeds on etsy lol. @Matt Vanilla Gorilla, save some seeds for me .

They have tons of seeds! All on the inside. I can try collecting some for you guys, but can't tell you how to grow them if you want to look it up however. If it's like most trees it won't fruit until at least the 3rd year. But it is a tree with some awesome properties other than just it's fruit.

That would be awesome...I would be willing to pay for mailing and your time and trouble. Living in Florida they should grow pretty fast. I have had luck with other seeds. Let me know what you want and when you have some and I will PM you my address.
