This is the cage I was going to work with, but i'm going to buy a diy one.

Do you guys think I can make this cage work if I get a baby? I'd put something in it to split the length.

I want to just buy the one big cage from diy, but have read about needing a small cage for a baby.

There would be no problem if you get a baby to keep it in that. You wouldn't need to make it smaller, it's just so they find it easy to catch the food. If it's not too cluttered and you have no substrate for crickets to hide in a chameleon can hunt easily in there.
When it's ready to move to the bigger mesh one you will probably see a bit more pawing at the glass and pacing - mine did that a little before he moved to his big boy viv
