New to the Forum. Meet Grumpy and Clarice

I just found this site and have been reading a lot. You all have built a great community here. I have 2 Veiled Chameleons. The male, Grumpy, is approx. 5 months old and I purchased him from a breeder south of Chicago. My female, Clarice, is also approx. 5 months old. I purchased her from Petco.

They both stay in Exo Terra terrariums. Grumpy's is 36" x 18" x 36" and Clairice's is 18" x18" x 24" (She will be getting the same size as Grumpy in the next few months. Both get misted by Exo Terra Monsoon misters and get gut loaded crickets and a rare bee moth treat. (I know bee moths are fat blobs so they are treats only)

Here are a few photos of them and their terrariums.

Welcome to the forums and congratulations on the new Veiled additions! They look awesome!

I like your cage setup for grumpy as well, love the look of glass! I would however recommend to remove the substrate at the bottom as they could easily ingest it which could lead to some unfortunate health issues.

welcome

I had indoor outdoor carpet before but it stayed wet all the time and I was afraid of mold. The bark chips dry out faster.

What do most people use that does not create issues with the misting systems?

When you upgrade clarice's cage, I would go mesh. Veileds can get away with lower humidity and you will get better airflow.

I use a combination of acrylic and screen, but as long as you can maintain the desired humidity you should be fine. I don't use anything in the bottom of the enclosure just for cleaning purposes. (I used to have the green reptile mat and switch it out often, but when I installed drainage I just used a plastic liner.) I would consider some sort of drainage if you are using the Monsoon systems. The timers usually fail and you can come home to a puddle  (I did!)

Grumpy and Clarice are very cute! Best of luck with them and Welcome to the forums!!! :D

Then We have the same cage, (18x18x24) I thought the background looked familiar. :) I love the setup you have. I've never seen the larger terrarium in actual use. It looks HUGE! On the smaller one, I see a dish attached to the glass, does your cham use it?

Here's my little guy, who's name is Jackson even though he's a veiled cham.

I'd love to get the 36x18x36, but it won't fit my stand. :( I'm looking at the 24 x18 x 36 one. It seems like a fair compromise, but it's also more expensive by $50 on Amazon.

A lot of people do not use any substrait as Chams if hunting can catch some if aiming for food and ingest it. My cham was in an aquarium when I first got him. I had to pick the bark and other stuff out of his mouth several times. It scared me to think he would try to swallow it. I have some nice plastic logs and other stuff to fill the area at the bottom as chams I believe stick for the most part to the upper levels of the terrarium. The stuff on the bottom in all honestly is more for me, than him.

As far as misting is concerned, I use a Walgreens Humidifier. It works VERY well, too well in fact. lol The timer it's on has a 30 minute minimum cycle, and even on the lowest setting, it turns the terrarium into Dagobah from Star Wars in less than 5 minutes. lol

Dagobah on the lowest setting:

I'm currently working on a control circuit utilizing this controller from Amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B009VY1ANM/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i01?ie=UTF8&psc=1

There are other ways, but this looks good to me, and is very cost effactive. I should have it Monday to play with and see what it does.

If I control the humidity manually like I do now, (Just it off when it gets to 70%) the moisture that collects easily dries up with the basking light on. I don't need the humidty on at night. Even in the winter, the temp stays about 65 degrees with a 53% humidity.....just about perfect for our guys! :D

Cheers.

The dish on this side works great. it is held on by 2 magnets that go outside the tank. it came with several replaceable cups so I just put the worms in the cup and drop it in. Clarice checks it all the time to see if there are any snacks in it.

Go for the 36"x18"x36" it is awesome. I did buy it on Amazon and had no issues getting it here. I built my own stand for it. I just realized you are in Ohio. I live just outside of Indy. Road trip it and I will help you build a stand for yours.

Your pictures did not show up. Please try to post them again I would love to see your setup.

Try it now. I think I had them marked as private. My setup is nothing speacal, but functional and is still a work in progress.

Where did you get the feeder dish? I want one.

I would go for the larger exo terra but I just bought this:
http://www.lowes.com/pd_19801-1281-...=1&currentURL=?Ntt=garage+cabinets&facetInfo=

It works GREAT for the 18x18x24 terrarium, but too small for the 36x18x36 one. :( I thought it matched the dark colors of the exo terra well amd it's pretty rugged. It has plenty of utility inside for hanging parts holders and such. I've only begun to mess with it's storage capacity. I also bought the castor set ($20) so when it comes time to clean, I can easily roll it to the sink or around the room.

I was happy to find the 24x18x36 one on amazon, but just a bit tee'd it was $50 more than the larger one. Hopefully it may go down in price before I really need it.

I'll keep you in mind when I go for the larger terrarium. If I don't go for the 24x18x36 I may contact you about that stand. (Yours looks great, but needs wheels! :p )

Great looking chams, if you plan on breeding them I would refer to JannB's blog on the proper egg laying bins, ect. Best wishes!:p
