New Veiled Cham

Hey there, I am new to the forums and recently purchased a female Veiled Cham, my wife named her Violet. She is set up in a 16x16x36 glass terrarium with screen top and one screen side. I am currently using a ReptiRain Mist system (terrible) I have a Mist King Arriving on Monday; I'm sure she'll be happy. When it gets here I am redoing her cage and giving her a pothos in addition to the artificial stuff that is in there now. I want to know what you would recommend as a bottom for the cage to plant the pothos in. I was going to lay lava rocks as a false bottom with a screen above that, then some organic soil for the pothos with a layer of coco substrate on top of that. Any comments? Also anyone have experience with a pothos in a glass terrarium as for a mist settings to avoid overwatering it and still keeping my Cham happy. I am also purchasing a hibiscus and keeping outside with a cage around it to bring her out on nice sunny days for her to lounge out with us.

Thanks For Your Time

Make sure to cover your substrate so your cham does not accidentally ingest it. I use large river rocks on top of the soil.

Yes, veiled cham in particular are notorious for snapping up and eating junk.

You would need to have your soil covered, then it will be hard to clean when it gets pooped on

That's why I have plain bare floors, with no potted plants inside the cage for them to use as a toilet.

Welcome to the forums and congrats on your new girl. It sounds like Violet is going to live a spoiled life and that's the way it should be. Veileds are totally awesome and the little girls are just so sweet. :) I have a blog attached below for how I have had success raising veileds over the years. I hope it will help you to keep Viloet healthy and happy.

Also females can and often do lay eggs without a male even being around so she will need a laying bin in her enclosure at all times after reaching the age of 5 months old. Here's some important info for females.

Thank you for the insight guys; and especially thanks for the links janb. Extremely informative and helpful.

I got her a tropical hibiscus today; repotted it in some organic soil and am quarantining it for about two weeks before taking her out to lounge with us. I set it up on the pouch in front of our chairs so we can keep an eye on her and any of these crazy hawks around here.
