Newbie

Hi Everyone!

I'm a newbie here - we have a baby Jackson chameleon that we got two days ago and are just thrilled to have him!

I've been surfing the forums and have found some great information - thank you! What I haven't found (not saying it's not here - I just haven't found it yet!) is the amount of misting we should be doing for our little guy. I've read 3-4 times a day....but just how much? Any insight? Thanks in advance!

I have a Jackson's too, and he's great. With them, you can never really over-water, in my opinion. As long as the cage is drying out and everything isn't constantly well all day, every day, there's no problem. Mine get misted for little under an hour every day in 3, 15, and 20 minute bursts throughout the day. And my jackson's might drink the entire time in one of those 20 min chunks, so they definitely love water.

If you don't have an automatic mister, this is what I suggest doing if it's feasable for you. Get a nicer $20 pesticide pump from Home depot/lowes that comes with a finer mist nozzle (I find that the ones under $20 aren't as good. They stink and are really flimsy) and fill it with hot water (it will come out warm in a fine mist). I used to open the cage door and rig the hose nozzle so it was pointed at the inside of the cage, pump it a lot, and just let it spray. Mine will spray continuously for at least 5 minutes with a good pumping, so it's easy to give him a nice 15-20 minute shower first thing in the morning while you're still doing other things. So I would give him a longer shower in the morning, so he can load up on water, and then do a couple smaller couple-minute ones during the day to keep the humidity up and make droplets for him to drink from if he wants. You might want to put some plastic sheeting on the back of the cage or something to protect your walls! And definitely figure out a drainage system if you don't have one already.

Remember that there isn't a single way to do misting, and different schedules work for different people/chams. So try out different lengths and schedules and see what seems to work best for your little guy and go from there

It's amazing, me neither! But here I am with 6 chameleons. But they are fantastic.
