Veiled Chameleon has something protruding from the vent area. Looked like he just needed to pass a plug again, he passed it and now it wont go back in. Has turned hard and still out. been out for a few months, still eats and acts normal, passes feces regularly. No vets in area except your "normal" pet vets. Any suggestions?

Could you post a picture? If it is indeed just a sperm plug stuck, you may be able to loosen it with a warm water bath. Possibly gently pull it out yourself. Or it may come out with next poop. But There are other things this could be, so best to post a pic if you are at all unsure. Smegma colours is usually creamy white to light tan-brown.

There are a few threads on here already about sperm plugs

What city/town are you in? Perhaps someone can recommend a vet to you.

The closest one is in Tallahassee and I'm in Pensacola, it's a few hours away. Don't have any pics, dig cam is busted. I've had to remove one myself a few months before this happened. He passed this one but didn't go back in.

Im confused. If the sperm plug is released, nothing is left to go back in?
Do you mean the hemipene is out?

Im confused, the issue is now a few months old but your no willing to drive 3 hours to go to the vet? I think its pretty clear what you need to do.

yeah, last time i made the trip my ball python ended up dead, didn't look like they knew what they were doing, my ball had a prolapse, the vet jammed it back in, and taped him up said he was fine, he died on the way home. sorry, not that trusting in vets!

I have an excellent vet in Orlando.......he has a ton of chameleons himself. But I guess that a ways from you?

Wow. Ok, I'm sorry if this sounds harsh but you yourself stated it has been MONTHS. If you couldn't find a vet to go to (even a few hours away, sometimes you have to do that for your pets.) in a FEW MONTHS, you should reevaluate your pet ownership. I can't help being totally disgusted by this.

Get your chameleon to a vet or find someone who will take him/her off your hands and actually care for it.

It sounds like it needs to be amputated-esp if hard. No doubt the animal is in pain. Call a Vet to see if they can refer you to someone close. Or even mail it to a Vet that may see it-might cost you but you signed up for pet ownership.

you know what im disgusted by? vets that don't know what they're doing, do it anyway, charge u a fortune, and your animal dies. Unless i know the vet, or have been recomended, I'm not taking my animal. sorry. his condition has not changed in 3 months, still eats, poops, drinks, not stressed. I see it as more of a risk to take my rep to a vet than to not. maby you have too much trust in these vets that are there to primarily MAKE MONEY, sorry guess i've had too many bad experiences.

Well then how about making an attempt at getting a recommendation before months go by?
