noob here, setting up a panther terrarium

Well, after reading as much as I can, I found a well priced "setup" for the panther chameleon I want to raise. I don't have him yet since I want to make sure the terrarium is as close to 100% as I can.

Thus, this is where i'm at so far. The cage is fully screened, and it measures 36x18x18. For furnishing, I don't have any real plants, though I do have a tall branch with some varying vines looped around. I feel that for now, it maybe ok for a young panther, though when he grows up, I'll most likely move up to a larger cage.

As for lighting, I have two spots and a florescent bulb. the bulbs are of different wattage, since i'm trying to achieve a temp. variance between the two. They are placed on the rear corners, with basking areas setup approx. 6-8" below to spots. The florescent is right on front, shining over the entire enclosure.

Right now, the temps seem not to be in order. The higher temp stop is averaging around 90-91*. I want the other spot area to be around 75-80*, so to create a cooler spot to hang out in.

In the middle of the cage, the temps go as far down as 75*'s, but it will fluctuate a bit higher or lower. Sometimes, with the lights on, as low as 71*'s.

When it comes to humidity, I just added a vicks ultrasonic humidifier to get the values up. When i mist, it will shot up to about 80%, temps go down, but will eventually creep back down. With the humidifier, i'm getting around 75-79% in the middle of the cage. I think that is fine, but that is with just the humidifier and at 100%, filling in from the top.

Anyways, sorry for the long post. I want to make sure the terrarium is the best I can get it before introducing the panther. Is there anything that ya'll feel I may do differently or a set of values to try to hit? The panther will most likely be a young one, 3-4months, so I have to plan accordingly.

Well, what do ya'll think?! :)

thanks!

You are getting obsessed with the temps. Thats not neccessarily bad, but I'm curious what part of the world your in . Winter may bring a whole new temperature dynamic into your home, thus changing ambient temps.

Truthfully , I get concerned when my ambients get over mid 80s. Otherwise, I let the chameleons actions speak as to what they need. For example a cham that is constantly under a basking spot , may not be able to raise its temp high enough. A cham that is constantly on the bottom of the cage may not be cool enough . Keep in mind , these behaviours can also indicate other issues....

90 may be a little hot in the basking spot for a 3 month old. I might try around 85 until he is a couple of months older....

thanks. As for the age of the cham... i don't have one yet, but I have a breeder that has a few and most likely they will be around 3-4 months old.

I live in miami, fl. The cage is in my bedroom, where the temps are around 71*. I know I may sound a bit obsessive... but that is my nature... i guess! I'm used to aquariums and they require tons of attention.

I'm still trying to figure out where to properly place the humidifier/noozle thingy setup i got going... kinda ghetto but it works!! Where do ya'll keep your gauges?

thanks again ya'll!!

also, should the humidity be varying within the terrarium or should it all be a constant? Cause after looking at the gauges, i'm getting 77% where the humidifier is misting and about 50-60% at the other end.

It would seem difficult to keep the whole terrarium constant unless I'm constantly misting more than two times a day, as i'm doing right now.
