Odd one out

This importer runs his business out of Canada. He imports WC from Maddy and sells them in large groups for a good price. He takes a lot of my CB chameleons and other various breeders chameleons and ships a few hundred at a time down to the U.S. The market in the states is better than it is up here. In this particular group of 30, I have found worms in only 10 of them so far. A few have some toe infections from being ripped out of trees. For the most part all of them look great. I found a great vet that is looking them all over for a great price too. You asked for a pic of another female, this is one that I haven't found any problems with yet.

looks like the males i got from an importer down here in miami who also didnt know what he was selling.he was trying to sell them to me as ambilobe but i knew other wise.
quick question..did you buy him from an importer down south?if yes, how many did you get in total? can i have pics of any "true" females you got in that bunch?
sorry for the interrogation its just that im after some specific females that were brought in by this brainless importer and it seems we might have dealt with the same nutcase!

"Maroantsetra panthers are from an area between Tamatave and Sambava on the east coast of Madagascar. Their display coloration is similar to Tamataves, with generally more of a red color and less orange. They are also a dark green basic color with darker or non-distinct body bars. The horizontal white stripe is always present."

Yes, but funny their isn't a photo to represent the locale :D

Here are 2 photos of what my Maroantsetra Male looked like asleep and awake. He showed more red when he was sleeping and more orange when he was awake and relaxed. I've recently sold out of Maroantsetra, but he was one awesome male.

The chameleon in question is the one at the beginning of the thread, and for your info there are three pics. After talking it over with the importer there is a good possibility that it could be a Maro. This one being the odd one out of the group.

I was talking about the Bluebeast site, hence the quote in my post.

This one is similer in a way but does not show that much colour.

The reason I know it's a male is because that's exactly what my Maroantsetra started looking like as it passed the 4 month age. He was bought as a Female Ambanja from Connie Dorval, and started showing coloration exactly like your WC. Needless to say, it's obvious Connie totally screwed up there...

I know how you feel, bought a chameleon as one locale and it turned out to be another. It's a good thing that the importer is willing to exchange. I remember the expo where she dropped her display and all of her babies got loose. I think that is where the mix up occured

Yes, I've heard that story from 3 people so far. She should have told all her customers that there is a chance that they're getting something other then the label states. I purchased that particular one after that show, and I had no clue about it. All I knew was that it was supposed to be a brand new bl of ambanja, and female.

But I can definitely say, it looked almost identical to your WC fella when it started showing signs of color, and boy was I disappointed in her.

It's one of the many reasons that I sold off my Ambanja lines. I just couldn't be 100% sure that the females were actually Ambanja.

Unfortunately, we have already found that the person who designed that website is not using true locality data but rather "best guesses" on some of those locality claims. So, yeah, it is still quite likely. There is a large area around Maro where they could've been collected. It's not like they only take them from within the city limits, etc.

Well, until we've been to Maddy to see for ourselves, it's just assumption. Who's to say they ONLY have one look. Look at Ambilobe and their variation...

Well, once we've been to Madagascar, it's still an assumption based on color because of the variability.

The point I was trying to make to you is not that they are "Tamataves" mislabeled as "Maroantsetra" but that what you may think of as one locality, Maroantsetra, actually covers 500 square miles or more. What comes in labeled as Maroantsetra in any given year does not mean they were all collected from the same acre of forest.

Chameleon Nation
The original animal posted could be what we here call a "she-male", or "none-of-the-above". I have imported about a dozen such critters in the last 6 years, and produced a dozen or so additionally. Their shape is 75% male usually, in that they have a more pronounced rostral appendage than a female, but not as strong as some males. They are larger than a normal female, but would rate as a small male at best. Their color is bolder than a normal female, but also never as strong as the males of that locale. They have no hemipenal bulge. They show no interest in breeding as either sex. They will not breed. Somewhere there is genetic confusion, and it appears to be totally random in our experience. We have never spent the money to necropsy one, and don't really care to, as we have no doubts as to it being "mixed up". Not saying that is what has happened here, but it absolutely does happen, and was not suggested by others.
