Old Age? Or Something of Concern?

I’m gonna try my best to convince my family (who are on a business trip right now) to let me make an appointment if this is still a problem tomorrow. One of the eyes is looking a little better, and is almost all the way open, but still half sunken in. But I really don’t want to see him go. I love this guy.

In the meantime, just keep giving him shower baths when you can and while in enclosure misting him, with a spray bottle... not directly in his face but let the side mist hit him slightly. How are his urates... white? Or orange? I know youll prob have to wait for bowel movement tho.

Dont spray him down too frequently tho, dont want to stress him too much

The one that’s currently on the floor of his cage is yellow orange, but I remember the other day it was pearly white.

Ooh okay so they prob also sunken because he not drinking.. just keep making sure he gets some water inside of him.. the showers are one of the best ways to get them to drink since its a constant misting.. although they can be shy and not drink infront of people

It’s just so weird to think he isn’t drinking. His mist king goes off every hour. I would think he would know to drink if he were dehydrated.

Yeah i know. And youve had him for so long... its more likely cause hes stressed from his eye annoying him so hes not doing what he usually does... just a guess though... .just like us.. when were nauseous we dont wanna eat

Is vitamin A in the multivitamin suppliment we give to them or do we need to get that seperately?.. not home atm otherwise id look at bottle. Or is a specific bottle have more vita a then a multi
Depends on the multivitamin. Herptavite does not have Vitamin A. Repashy Calcium Plus and a few others by them do and is considered a multivitamin and calcium and in some even D3. I personally like to seperate vitamin a from the other multi vitamins for more control. Vitamin A overdose is a serious thing as well which scares me with the multis with it a little.

He really should be seen by a vet. I understand your predicament but really mum and dad have a responsibility too as they allowed you have your cham.

Could you offer to repay them by working it off or come up with a suitable repayment option?

You could also try the guilt trip that surely they don't want to see an animal suffering and you need their help?

like i said, hes not dehydrated he looks to be holding in his eye... @SharpShooter has a good point. along with that i think whats best for your cham would be an eye flush. it looks like something is really bothering him in there... is there any crust or something in the eye???shed shouldnt affect him like that.

I got the vet appointment set up. I mean, I’m 20 years old and I can do these things by myself but I’m also a student and fronting the costs can be a pain in the butt. My mom ultimately told me to use my best judgement.

The eye turret looks like is rubbing excessive by the cham..if u look closely on those black marks then u will know what Im talking about..the cham will need to see the chameleon specialist vet asap for that eye hopefully will get better in time...Godspeed to ur cham.

He has been rubbing it on the vines n things in the terrarium. It’s really been worrying me.

Thats because he felt irritated ...Im assuming u already have the vet's appointment lineup...the Vet will have to look into that eye and prescribed some meds for him.
Yeah, I’ve been to this vet several times, with chameleons from the pet store I work at, but they’re usually much younger and worse off. I think I remember them prescribing an eye drop called ciproflaxin. I just want my buddy to feel better :/

Ciprofloxacin is an antibiotic used to treat a number of bacterial infection.
If u can bring back in time...I would start off with just the simple saline rinse...since that eye is already infected thats why ur vet prescribed the ciproflaxin.u can always get a second opinion from another chameleon specialist vet just to see what they recommend.

I'm pretty sure this isn't a cause, but if I'm reading your lighting description correctly you have an infared night light on in your cage. That needs to be removed immediately - chameleons do not need light at night, and a dip in temperatures is actually beneficial to them. I agree that it looks like he's got something in there due to how his eye is closed and "pulled in". Good luck at the vet, this is a vital trip for your cham.

I hope your guy is doing better. I see that you have a mistking, and it goes off every hour for 30 seconds. If I was you, I would change the schedule to go off every two hours for 2 1/2 minutes. 30 seconds is not enough duration to stimulate to drink or give him time to clean his eyes.

Just an update for everyone; Calvin saw the vet today. He got an X-Ray and some Blood Testing, the X-Ray showed that his fatty deposits that hold the turret out for us to see if completely depleted and he suspects malnutrition of being the main suspect. He perscribed Terramycin Opthalmoc Ointment, and he found a little bump between the nostrils, which he’s saying is the least of our worries right now, but he threw some Ceftazidime at it. The X-Ray also showed that there’s no sign of metabolic bone disease, so our Calcium/Phosphorus balances are normal. The blood testing will either confirm or deny his suspicion of Kidney problems, which he claimed to be common in Chameleons his age. He gave some fluids, and the blood test results should come back on Thursday.
