So I have plenty of experience with veiled and panthers and I would like to expand my keeping into some different species. I'd like to hear everyone's opinions on their favorite chameleons and why they enjoy keeping them. I was thinking about giving a crested chameleon a try I think they're absolutely beautiful looking with that crest but I'm open to suggestions.

I have never had a pygmy cham but I would if I had room for another cham. I just think they are pretty cool. I hear they are a challenge to keep healthy and happy. I also hear that multiples can be kept together if given enough room and cover.

Pygmys are pretty cool and I've thought about giving them a try but I know they have a relatively short life span and that is a deterrent for me I hate the thought of only having my chameleon for a year or two before they die. I have plenty of space for whatever I get and I do like the idea of being able to keep multiples together so I like that about the pygmies. I haven't heard that they are harder to keep than any other species so that would be something for me to research.
What kind of chameleons do you have?

How about O's if you want to breed or Quads. They both need some experienced breeders to help establish them. And they are gorgeous!

I have a veiled. I to think that pygmy life span is a big downfall to having one. http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2008/06/080630-chameleon-year.html
This is a link to a national geographic article that talks about a cham in Madagascar that only lives about 5 months.

All chameleons are gorgeous. I've never tried breeding but I'm sure I could if I tried. It certainly wouldn't be something that I would start without doing proper research 1st and I do like the idea of breeding to help the conservation of a species.

I'd cry every 5 months if I had that chameleon. I'm partial to my veiled, I love my grumpy girl even though she can't stand the sight of me.

I wanted an ambanja so bad! I think they're so gorgeous and so colorful. I love my little veiled tho and think they have the cutest faces

Both quads and graciliors need pet keepers. People have the mistaken view that they are difficult. They aren't. A wild caught might be a challenge, but a captive born and bred quad or gracilior? A piece of cake! Just keep the cool and wet.

Graciliors are really cool. Males have horns, dorsal crests, and sail fins. Both sexes have red claws which are soooooo cool. In general, they are a fairly inactive chameleon which makes them a good candidate to thrive in captivity. My avatar is my first male gracilior. Oh, I just happen to have a group of baby gracilior males that need to find their forever homes. ;)

I can definitely vouch for the awesomeness and ease of graciliors! First let me say that I also love Graceful chameleons...that was the first kind I had and he was quite friendly. I would recommend that species to anyone that is good with keeping warmer temps. Now my eyes have been opened to the wonder of a montane species - I have a gracilior from Janet and I can't get enough of him! His colors and patterns are just gorgeous, his trademark features are so interesting to watch develop, he doesn't hate me/is fairly chill, and he really is easy to care for. Cool temps (67-75 at the highest typically) and lots of humidity/mist keep him happy (and me happy because I'm a fan of that temp range in my house). Nutrition is a breeze.

Good luck with your decision - can't wait to see what you get!

I didn't mean that they were that hard, I meant we need people to help establish CB more than what we have, dont you agree?

I would say, it is likely harder to keep their babies alive then say a veiled though right?

I think "Hard" is overrated anyway, nothing is hard, it is just knowing the tips and tricks and variances with the species. The issue largely with some species is that the breeders that have success dont want to share it and you have to have a secret handshake or club ring to get any info :p.

Do you have any pics of your babies and what are you asking for them? I really do prefer CB over WC. I'd love a mellers but until they start successfully breeding them they're just a dream

Well sorry to burst your bubble as mine got busted.

Mellers are very very very hard to raise CB, I spoke with a few people that have actually done it. They said they will not be doing it again :(. Furthermore, I read recently that Tanzania, just closed again. So no WC mellers either :(.

I read it on here, in passing and have been looking again for the thread to get the dates and details but no luck :(.

All that said, there is a girl on Facebook in the Chameleon Central Group with a clutch of Mellers, I would hit her up if I were you see if you can pre order one. That is assuming any of them make it. She is currently asking for help in raising the clutch, they are 1 month old.

I'll send you a PM. Thanks for your interest.

As far as Mellers, There will be some coming in from Mozambique, I believe, but they have all the problems of wild caught Mellers, a.k.a. "The 90-day Chameleon," in other words you have it for 90 days and then it dies. They are really tricky to deal with. They require a lot of horizontal space and if you don't give them the right cage, they might decide to up and die on you. Jpowell86 is working to establish a breeding colony in the US but that is going to be a long time coming.

I did a lot of research on the Mellers and knew they were the 90 Day Chameleon and most die after capture. I adore these creatures and didn't want to risk one's life simply because I desired it. I hope that a CB colony eventually gets established because if it does, I'm definitely getting one. The space and water requirements I can provide no problem. But since that's not happening anytime soon I'd like to get something else, different from the veiled and panthers.
