Sorry about your panther. What happened if you don't mind me asking? Still have your vieleds?

Buying online is safe, just have to buy from a reputable breeder/site. Keep in mind while pricing online that there will still be a shipping charge, which will easily be over 50. There is a special type of gaurnteed overnight with morning delivery, that's how animals are shipped, and it isn't cheap.

Depending where you live shipping this time of year could be dangerous. Have you called your local per store? Is that where you got your one that passed?

Beware online sites that are too cheap or have underground or backwater or other terms in their names. May be a good idea to figure out why your panther passed away...was it old, sick?

Lol :).

Underground and Backwater are great sites actually. As long as you understand what your getting when you buy from them.

The reason underground and Backwater get a bad rap, is they sell pretty much exclusively WC animals. Freshly imported alot of the time. Those animals are going to be in rough shape, they are going to have Parasites, and even if they do, (as they rarely do) have a CB animal it's been exposed to a facility that is mainly setup for WC animals, and thus will likely inherited parasites.

This is a good thing, for people that know what they are getting into. Fresh bloodlines for breeders are needed to keep the chameleon world going. Both also tend to get more exotic species, not yet having established Captive breeding, or has had little interest, or low imports.

Backwater and Underground keep this hobby running. They are the ones that bring in a large portion of our imports, without them we would have nothing but a inbred gene pool with no new blood, which would quickly come to serious issues.

For a pet owner, especially a low experience one, buying from them is not a great idea. Not because they are a bad business but because there animals are WC and that's a different league of care and requirements. WC are always cheaper, thus is most of their stock. It's cheaper because the work to acclimate, and the vet bills required are high. So first time owners, or those with little experience but from them and their animals die. This isn't their fault, it's the nature of WC, doesn't mean that we can just forgo WC from our stables. Though new keepers should.

So TLDR, nothing wrong with Backwater or Underground, the OP should Avoid WC Animals, and buy a CB animal. Which in turn will have them not dealing with Underground or Backwater.

Was he a new arrival? May have had parasites, which means that Cage is dangerous.

If he was young new cham, that cage needs stripped and cleaned thoroughly the fact we dont know, makes it even worse, as if we dont know what killed him, we dont know if it can affect the next cham, and if it can how to kill it.

Umm ya there is a few issues with that cage. However, I dont know, or think that killed a new animal, but you never said if it was a new animal.

Your Lights need to be separated from the rest of the Cage. You dont have to have a Screen top, Per se. However I would use a screen separator. So you could build a shelf if you will of screen, that is 7-8 inches from the top of the cage. To separate the light compartment from the enclosure space.

I would add some venting in the back, just some large holes would be fine, in the light compartment area.

An alternative to the light compartment. Would be take off the plywood top and use screen, and set the lights up there. Or cut holes for the lights (easy for the basking bulb, hard for the flo)

That UVB coil bulb, those are not very good. You should get some T5HO linear UVB fixtures, with Arcadia tube bulbs.

Ideally you need alot more plants, and vines and branches and greenery. The cage is good sized, much larger than alot of folks use and thats good. However you need to crowd the space more, so the chameleon can feel hidden. As they really cant feel hidden in that cage.
