Oriental Roaches help

I was wondering if anyone here has had the chance to breed the Oriental Roach. I wish I could just breed Dubia's but they are not avaiable here in Hawaii so I am stuck with either the American Roach ( and no way to those as they are crazy, fast, large, they fly and are aggressive here in hawaii. Something in the Hawaii air  So I am going to try and breed the Oritental as they are slower, dont fly, smaller, and a lot like the Dubia but not as large.

I am going to try and breed them the same way as Dubia's and hope that they breed so if any of you can give me tips that would be great. The chams really seem to like them so I am going to try and start a colony.

Hawaii is very strict on what they will allow imported and I have tried many sources to buy dubias but no one and I mean no one will ship then to Hawaii. I am sure they are not allowed in period. That is why I am going to try and breed what is already here.

That would be a nice thought though, getting a permit and all... you could breed dubias and start a feeder black market ;)

Those roaches are fine for feeders and breed very fast. What I didn't like about them was that the males can climb smooth surfaces! I've read that they can be parthenogenic, so it might be worth trying to remove all the males from the colony and eventually get them to breed without the males. If you don't mind the males though, don't worry about it.

Can I get a genus/species for that oriental roach you speak of? You say they're rampant indigenous to Hawaii?

Thats good to know that they are parthenogenic. Yeah I saw that they can easily climb smooth surfaces as when I caught then in the plastic cup they were easily climbing up to the top. I just want another feeder option and no way will I breed the crazy american roach. Do you happen to have a care sheet for the Oriental? Thank you for your help.

Yeah I am not sure what kind they are but I looked up the picture and compared it to the list of the wild roaches in Hawaii. I am sure they were brought over with settlers. If you have more information on then that would be great.

They can be kept and bred the same way as Blatta lateralis but more moist. Very simple set up with egg cartons, food, water, and heat. No substrate needed. I'm not sure if olive oil works as a barrier, but Vaseline should.

The oriental roach is Blatta orientalis.

Great thank you very much for the info. I am going to attempt a colony.

Sure thing. If you need anymore help just send a PM and I'll help as much as I can.

Obtaining orientalis roaches in Hawaii

Aloha, SpartyTessy

I'm on the Big Island, in a rural area near Hilo, and would also like to start a colony of orientalis roaches. This would be my first roach colony so I'm choosing that species mostly based on this thread.

How are you finding or catching yours? (Or, if you haven't started the project yet, how to you plan to get them?) Mostly I see American roaches and don't recall seeing any orientalis, based on photos. Any help or advice on rounding them up would be greatly appreciated. Also, how may are you planning on using to start the colony with?

Thanks! Mike
