Chameleon Info:
  • Your Chameleon - Nosey Be Panther Chameleon, Male, 7 months old. In my care 5 weeks
  • Handling - Daily for a few minutes (he is very friendly)
  • Feeding - 5 crickets everyday and 1 hornworm every other week. Crickets are gutloaded with potatoes, carrots and flukers cricket diet. Hornworms are fed the same day they are purchased.
  • Supplements - ZooMed Repti-Calcium without D3 everyday. ZooMed Repti-Calcium twice a month. Rep-Cal Herptitive twice a month.
  • Watering - I hand mist his enclosure 5-7 times a day for 30-45 seconds. I have seen him drink only a handful of times.
  • Fecal Description - Normal looking brown fecal and white urate. Has never been tested for parasites.
  • History - N/A

Cage Info:
  • Cage Type - 18”x18”x24” glass terrarium with screen top (Exoterra).
  • Lighting - 50 watt ZooMed Basking lamp in a dome. 2 ExoTerra UVB Bulbs in a a dual bulb hood (not dome). All lights are on a 12 hour on 12 off light cycle starting at 7am and ending at 7pm. I take him outside at least 3 days a week for an hour at a time.
  • Temperature - 75 ambient, 88 basking. Overnight temp of 72. I use a thermometer at the top and bottom of the enclosure.
  • Humidity - Fluctuates between 50% - 80%, allowing time to dry in between mistings. I use a hydrometer at the top and bottom of the enclosure.
  • Plants - Pachira aquatica and 1 fake bush
  • Placement - Low traffic area away from vents and fans. The top of the enclosure is 3 and a half feet off the ground.
  • Location - Southern Ontario (Canada)

Current Problem - Oscar’s tends to close his left eye frequently. His left eye sinks in a little bit when he closes it, and the right one is fine. When he is using his left eye it looks normal and it is a full turret like the right eye. He only closes it for 10-20 seconds every hour or so. I have seen him clean BOTH of his eyes many times and when he closes his left eye, he is not cleaning it, it looks like he is sleeping, but it is only his left eye. He is still moving around and climbing when he closes it. If I wave my hand in front of him or show him a feeder he opens his eye up right away. He has never slept during the day.

*****The last two pictures are what his left eye looks like 99% of the time*****

Hey there! Im at work and can't read through your husbandry list. Howerever I will say that unfortunately eye problems can range from so many possibilities. My panther did the same thing and I am working with my vet to figure it out. Will throw this out there though to help give youideas: https://www.chameleonforums.com/thr...nced-keepers-please-share-your-wisdom.152159/

If no one else jumps on here by the time I'm home I'll read your husbandry as well :)

It's unusual to have two uvb bulbs, was this part of a kit? This could potentially cause issues, but not 100% sure if it's THE issue. Exo Terra makes several 13W UVB bulbs, you said dome right? If I'm assuming correctly, you have the compact florecent as opposed to the linear? Is it Exp Terra's 100, 150, or 200 (all are 13W)? Web address to Exp Terra CFL for their 100uvb 13W: http://www.exo-terra.com/en/products/reptile_uvb100.php

Re reading your post you did say hood, not dome... I'm not seeing a linear 13W on their website tho, but if you can link me to the one on their website you are using it would help :)

if you have a cfl you want to change to a quality linear bulb like an arcadia or a zoo med h.o. also it can just be stuck shed or dust in his eye. use d3 once a month as you do take him out quite often. also, dont make the same mistake i did. find a good gutload recipe and follow it. gut loading doesnt seem to exist in the uk. no one really cares. other than that your husbandry looks ok to me. maybe consider upgrading cages in the near future though. they do grow quite fast:)

Yes I will be getting a new screen enclosure in the next few months, as for the uvb, they are cfl bulbs l, not linear.

yeah... cfl(curly bulbs) have been known to damage eyes. you need to get a long linear bulb. cfls dont penetrate mesh well so not enough uvb is given off.
