Our 1st hatchlings!!

Finally found time to post some photos of our first babies. The brev hatched last week- the only survivor of 3 eggs.

The veileds began to come out of their shells on Friday the 11th. Sixteen so far and many more to go.

Of course we're very nervous new parents. Everyone seems to be doing great thus far (even us:)).

my new baby coming this wed

their sooo cute! I'm especailly biased to the pygmy baby. I just can not seem to get good pics like that, I need some chammy photo lessons!

Sandy, you and Juli are baby twins with the pyglets and the veileds!
They're amazing, and congrats!!

Thank you, everyone, for your kind words.

Juli, I know, it's crazy. I think we started our breeding projects about the same time last year!

We incubated the veileds at fairly constant and controlled 78f, following Kinyonga's temps. They hatched in 6 1/2 months, which is a month or 2 sooner than we expected. We have a Sambava clutch from 11/22/07 which we expected to hatch before this one. Hope the Sambavas make it! Their eggs were incubated differently from the vieleds, in an incubator, with a diapause period. When we visited Pam of Pam's Chams we saw that she just sets her panther egg containers in a closet and incubates them there. Since then we've just been setting them in a cabinet to incubate. But not the first 2 Sambava clutches, they were done with the diapause and specific temps and an incubator. We'll see.

These veiled guys are SO much fun. Some of them have their dad's temperament. Little teddy bears that like to be held and crawl around on us. If we reach a finger into the tub they'll stand up and climb on. Others are like mom and lurch away at the very sight of us. 16 so far- they climb around in there off and on all day, grabbing each other's faces and tails and shoving eachother and gaping at one another. Or forming chains, holding one another's tail. Or nesting together. Practicing all their moves. It's a riot.

Some people turn their noses up on veileds, but they are the cutest things! I feel they they have more personality then some of the other breeds, I know mine all have personalities.

Thank you for sharing those pictures.

I don't know why I haven't seen this thread earlier. Extreme cutenesses. Seems like the veileds are going to mature in no time with full casques and everything. In the "grumpy old men" shot; the second from left seems like already defending his territory. Might want to keep an eye on that possible tail nipper :)

Your brev is awesome. What a stump :)

Can you tell your veileds apart?

I can tell them apart if I use a magnifying glass. Don't know if it's due to their tiny spur, or my eyesight!

All seem to be doing very well except #16. That one tends to turn blackish and is often seen curled up in a ball. It is in its own little bin being kept at about 78 degrees. It acts as though it was born too early, but I kept these eggs more than 1 inch apart during incubation so one hatchling wouldn't stimulate its neighbor to hatch early. His/her egg was very white looking, and it pipped out and laid there for over a day, which has been common for this clutch. It did look blackish while laying in the pipped egg, however, which was odd. All the others were bright green to very pale green, almost white, while in the egg. Then it came out on its own and I found it crawling about next time I checked the eggs that day. I placed it in with the other neonates, but it stayed on the bottom of the bin and only walked around a few times, then curled up and turned dark so we isolated it. That way it is safe to develop on its own. Or, if it has a health problem, it won't share it with the others.

I just checked on #16 and he's walking around looking quite normal. We'll probably keep him separated for a few days until we're sure he's hunting and pooping and all that good stuff.
