Oustalet's Chameleon Facts

Hello, I am thinking about getting an oustalet's chameleon. It would be very helpful if people with general knowledge would be able to give me a few facts about them. For example, how long do they live, how much do they eat, what type of care do they need, ect... I just would like to know some facts about this species.
Thanks!

I haven't kept one long-term personally, but I raised up a few babies and we treated them like panthers, essentially. I forget who else has them but I know that member Thephotoprincess (The Chameleon Farm on facebook) keeps several Ousties and I'm sure she would be happy to answer any questions.

There are a few members that have them but she's the first one that comes to mind.

Olimpia is correct. I keep them like panthers. In fact my ousties share a large free range with a couple panthers.

I'm not sure on the lifespan as I've been keeping them a couple years but I would imagine it is similar or longer to panthers - larger species tend to have longer life spans.

They eat a lot! My male was up over 450 grams at one year old. I cut back on his food as I feel an over-weight chameleon is not a healthy chameleon. He currently ranges between 415-425 grams. He will eat as much as I allow but I limit his intake now. Same with my female - she is a bit of a fattie too. She is smaller but at about 275 grams ... I'm cutting her back as well. And I make sure the feeders are well gutloaded so that what they get is healthy for them.

They are very mellow as far as temperament. Sami - the male - goes with me to various places, anyone can handle or feed him, I've put clothes on him (he was an elf at Christmas), he tolerates pretty much anything.

How are all your new melleri doing? Ive been following your additions on your facebook page. Good to see you keeping them again.

Wow I didn't realize he was that big (that's a heavy chameleon)! How long is he, tip to tip? I only raised several WC babies to about 6 months or so before they went to new homes, so I really haven't gotten to see one full grown in person.

He's not really that long - about 21 inches. He is a very solid guy.

Hey, thanks for sharing some of your knowledge. Does anyone know where to buy a male at, preferably a baby?

I was following this post as I was looking into them as well from suggestions I got from members here from a post I had, and I imagine we could find some at The Chameleon Farm? Good luck with your search.

We don't have any for sale but anyone is welcome to come visit Sami and Frankie!

I have a few eggs that may or may not be good but we aren't specifically breeding oustalets. Frankie prefers a platonic relationship with Sami.

Sami is so awesome. Love seeing Sami on FB :)

Reptile Pets Direct has some. I ordered some of my chameleons from them, they were in very good shape.

Matt,

The folks above are spot on regarding Oustalet's- I keep mine similar to Veileds and Panthers- I kept all mine outdoors year-round when I lived in south florida. I currently have 2 adult females, residing indoors here in Las Vegas, I will start moving them outdoors by late Feb, weather permitting of course. I also have 80+ eggs in the incubator, eggs won't hatch till June or July-

Lizardguy will you be offering the hatchlings on sale here or do you supply some place and they are therefore already spoken for? If you do sell them on here or to the public in general, what is your asking price for a male? Does it matter if its just a pet weather its male or female in regards to color since it appears they are rather drab?.. (still beautiful), just wondering.

In my experience males are some shade of brown, beige, or sandy colors. Females are usually a shade of green/olive and whites. One of the females I have was a brilliant mix of yellowish & green, with some red, black, green, and brown right after I caught her. After she laid her first clutch of eggs (and acclimated to captivity), her colors calmed down to the typical greenish-whitish. In my experience the males grow substantially larger than females.
These are my first clutches of Oustalet's, I have lots of breeding experience with Veileds. I have a few wholesale contacts in SoCal, I was going to call them and offer them most of the hatchlings, plus try my luck at few local pets stores, and maybe craigslist, but I don't expect to sell many that way as they aren't as popular as Veileds. I didn't plan to sell them here or elsewhere online, as selling by onesies and twosies with packing and shipping gets to be a headache. Having said that, I will post when they start hatching, and if you are interested in one I'm sure we can arrange something-
