Panther biting rocks

HI all.

I have recently woke up to find my Panther down near the bottom of his plant biting the rocks/stones. The rocks are smooth so shouldnt hurt him but I am still concerned. Is this normal behaviour for a juvenile? The rocks were light in colour and I have changed them to dark. However he still tries to bite them.

I have also seen him biting the trunk of his plant and also trying to eat soil (before the stones were put there). The rocks seem to be the new fad though.

Any idea why this would be happening? He is eating well and has drinking options.

Thanks

I have have the same issue with my panther they seem to go down and eat the soil or bark big chunks for that matter.

I took marbles and covered the top base of the plant so he cant access the soil and stuff i was worried it could harm him and cause compaction.

I think it is a natural thing for them to dig and find bugs and moisture The thing is, he does it even if there is loads of water and food.

Try cover it with marbles.

Don't you think he could easily swallow a marble though? Most of us use the large river rocks or something that is large enough for them not to swallow. And to the answer the question, yes they will chew on things. You just have to make sure what they chew on they cannot break off and swallow.

I wouldn't go with marbles.... My panther could easily eat one of those.

I got my large river rocks from the dollar store. Super cheap and they come in a decent sized pack.

No way would I use marbles. They are too dangerous.

Its not nice when you can hear their teeth grinding on the rocks. Should I just leave him to it then Carol?

I say just let them eat dirt!! They do it for a reason, just make sure to sift the soil on top of the pots to about 1-2 inches deep. I use soil from the forest floor for this.

im haveing kinda the same issue my panther is eating the bark of branches in his cage my guess is they do these things for a reason so just watch him as i will watch mine but dont stop him from doing what his insticnts tell him to :)

you are right and there is obviously a reason why they do it and probably do it in the wild as well!!! I guess sometimes we are all on the cautious side with these animals but using marbles is a disaster waiting to happen!!!

You are rite a fully grown Panther could easily swallow one. Jimbo at the moment is only 7 months old the marbles i have a quite large :) It wont fit. but i better monitor it. Ill remove it.

Id say a very small risk if the soil is fine without perlite ect. My females lay right in the plant pots as well. I got 28 eggs yesterday from my ambilobe.

I didn't see anything and I really want to see a panther gnawing some rocks 😂 I think you have to upload the video to YouTube or Imgur, Instagram, TikTok etc first then share here.
Ughh yeah it didn't upload 🙄. Have a couple short little videos if him attacking a rock or two . Put shade cloth stuff over the rocks for now but still curious why he was doing it. When I get home gonna try to upload the videos
