hi again, i have another question , i have not place 2 towels over the cage making it completly dark after lights out, i have left a couple of inches all around the bottom so there is enough airflow for him to breathe and stuff, i just took peak into the cage and i noticed my cham is sleeping on the screen cage, i usually see him on a branch when i wake up in the morn, is this normal? is he sleeping? i shut it quickly to make sure i didnt disturb him to much

They sleep in weird spots. Mine used to sleep hanging upside down from the top of his cage.

Yeah they sleep all weird--- I don't think blood rushed to their heads when they sleep upside down.

Mine used to take 3 to 5 minute naps during the day in weird sports-- this is not a good sign, they should only sleep during the night, then he would be very active.

I've seen my little 7 week guy sleeping sideways, upside down (he does more stranger things than the semi-adult I have) -- I've also seen him hang from his tail downwards for a long time--- idk what he was trying to do.

In the AM when I turn their lights on I can't tell if he's done sleeping-- he has his one eye open then the other one shut--

Sometimes they sleep very deep, you can't wake them up, not even a push would do anything-- idk if anyone saw their Chameleon do that.

You should have 0 light at night by 10pm I turn everything off. I did get a reptile red light for the night but I guess you can use that when it's Winter. I guess any type of light can disrupt their sleep.

I may have misunderstood your message, seemed like you are maybe using a red light at night? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure I read on here that you should only use ceramic heat emitters if you need to add heat at night. I believe that even the red, blue or anything emitting a visual light even that are for "night time" can disturb chameleons. It seems like it would be worth it to avoid them unless you absolutely have to use one. Maybe someone else can chime in to verify. :)

I concur

I think they can see any shades of light through their eye lids. they need good night sleep, idk if they get sleep deprived.

thanks for the advice, hes only been here since last monday so not to long ago, i think he still wants to find out where he wants to sleep each night, i also read on here that night time temps can drop to 45 -55 F

yeah- it drops but not too low- i guess in that case you should get a heat pad not red light district lamp -- makes it look like a strip club in there lol.

this girl at Petco tried to sell me a pair- i was only buying a heat/basking bulb-- she was like "this is for reptile night lamp" -- and i asked if the red light can be used to Chameleons-- she said yes. then I came here to ask, and senior members said no light pitch black at night.

Spot on! I am trying to teach the local Petco/PetSmart here about the chameleons (veileds) they have. I'm far from an expert, but I can see things they are doing wrong. One of the employees at one was genuinely interested and another just adopted a supposed panther that a friend of theirs got bored with after a short time, so I'm optimistic that they want to learn and do right by the chameleons. I'm at least trying to get them on the forum here to check what they are instructed to tell customers.

We change the masses one at a time!

honestly they don't know sh*t. they know more about dogs, cats, fish, dragons, etc...chameleon is rare not all petco and petsmart have them-- plus they don't sell them as quick as the other ones.

it's that if they chameleon doesn't get bought it suffers-- they dont use proper lighting and heat and you can see the colours on the chameleon as if no one dusted their feeders ever-- i understand in the wild they dont need anything but in captive more things get complicated.

No they actually have a "third eye" called a Parietal eye on the top of their heads which can sense light. If you google it you can find out more details and info on this.
