Panther chameleon types?

What is the difference between a nosy b, ambanja, sambava, etc.?? This might be a stupid question but I just had to ask...

I was about to try to cover it... but I'm sure some herpetologist is going to jump in and explain it like a pro, I'll leave it to them...

Those names/types are actually localities of where they're from. They tend to have a specific coloration such as the Blue Nosy Bes. If you go to breeders' websites you can see the difference between the locales.

Try looking at screameleons:

This shows you the coloration of the locales available in the US.

This Belgian breeder has pics of some rare locales not available in the US. You can see the different color schemes from each locale.

And I don't think it's a stupid question to ask, since pretty much all of us here has asked it when we first started. :D

LOL...I am no herpetologist but I have my fair share of locales. Basically the easiest way to think of it is all those names you named are cities in madagascar, commonly referred to as locales. Well each city has a different color pattern of panther chameleon. Thats about it, coloration...there are slight differences in body structure but not worth mentioning. You can see more on locales on my website :) I am a locale snob...very much against mixing locales or mixed morphs.

Some of the threads on this forum have the best most in the depth discussion on this subject. If you use the search tab and browse through for a while I know you could come up with a plethora of information that would be close if not impossible to find anywhere else.

Hey thanks guys! that first website really helped. Glad I asked! Not sure if it sounded like a stupid question or not... haha

Your link in your signature doesn't work, but your homepage link via your username does. Are you going to have any Tamatave, Maroansetra and/or Masoala anytime soon?

I have 2 unrelated clutches of Masoala right now that are about 2 months old. I only have a limited number of Tamatave and Maroantsetra, so I am thinking I am going to raise these for breeders for next year. I may sell a couple of those two locales.

I will be updating my website soon or you can sign up for the mailing list and I will inform you of which locales will be available and when.

This weekend I will get a few pics of some Masoala, Tamatave, and Maros.

Thanks,

Chris

I want to ask you, since you have the locale, are there any other Masoalas in the world that look like the stunning red and white make on the Pardalis.be site- or is that one just a freak? That is quite possibly the most beautiful animal I've ever seen in my life and I think I would pay just about any amount of money for it! Is it in any realm of possibility that another like him will be born... ever?

There was a member from Europe who would hold these minor "guess the locale" games and he posted some wild Masoalas that looked just like the pardalis.be Masoalas. I think that's how they really look like, kind of like their color scheme.

EDIT:
Cleanline's Masoalas look like this:

I have spoken with Will (owner of pardalis.be) a few times. He only had two of these that came in looking red and white. The shipment was actually a shipment of Tamataves, so the true locale of those two is still up in the air. Honestly I think they are from Cap Est. I speak with Mark Ten Haggeler fairly often about different locales. He has been there quite a few times (I have some of his experiences on the website) and he also believes those two are from Cap Est.

But yea, my Masoala look a little like a Sambava in the coloration and a little like a Maroantsetra in the pattern.

East coast locales can be quite difficult to decipher between because many times there are more than one "look" to panthers in the same region/locale.

Well, I'm not exaggerating when I say that I would do a lot of questionable things for a chameleon like that. Someday... someday
