Hi there, can I tag onto this thread?

I’m just writing for a bit of advice, I’m Uk based and bought a Panther Chameleon from a reputable reptile shop. They insisted that it was male and charged a high price for it. but I’m now having some serious doubts.

Some background. Purchased mid January and was said to be born in September but quite vague about dates, recently he/she was first not very active and basking a lot , and over the last couple days very active and investing the bottom of enclosure. Which they haven’t done before. There is maybe 5/6 inches of soil at the bottom so wondering if maybe looking to lay eggs?

There’s definitely some salmon pinks in there but also greens and turquoise so I’m really not sure. I can’t see much of a bulge on the tail. Before a shedding a week ago it was a lot greener most of the time. Now though mostly this pink colour with hints of green in there.

Also if he/she is female is there enough soil in there to lay into ? (Photo attached of enclosure.

Hi. I am not at all skilled in sexing panthers, but I think you may have a little girl. I’m not seeing a hemipenal bulge. Let’s see what those who are much better than I think though. @Dridrop12 @kinyonga

Definitely a female, and if the 6-8th pics in your first post are recent, you definitely have a gravid girl. You will want to include a lay bin ASAP or at least make sure the soil in the bottom is the right texture to hold a tunnel and not collapse.

I have never seen so many greens and blues in a female, she is stunning!

Normally, Panther chameleons spend about 20-30 days after the gravid period starts before laying eggs. While they can go a bit longer before becoming egg bound, it will be a concern if she goes longer than this.

If this plant is not inside her enclosure, she might not feel comfortable laying there. Try placing the lay bin inside the enclosure if you can, and if not you might have a problem. Iirc 8”x10”x12” is recommended for lay bin size (I could be wrong on this).

It’s fairly uncommon for a healthy, relaxed chameleon with a proper setup to become egg bound, other than in cases where there is no suitable laying location available. As long as you give her what she needs, it’s unlikely that laying will be much of an issue. Just give her time, and try not to stress her out in the meantime.

If you remember when she first started showing the dark colours with orange blotches, count forward 35 or so days to see when you should start worrying. If she starts showing signs of stress/illness however, take her to a vet as soon as you can to make sure she isn’t egg bound.
