Parasite question

How long do parasites last in chameleons. I was just thinking about it that I never had him tested when I got him. I’ve had him for over a year now. Should I still get him tested or is he fine at this point?

Parasites will last until they are treated. Definitely get him tested. Also, even if treated successfully for a parasite, they can again get infected, so usually it’s a good idea for a yearly check. Some even have it done every 6 months.

Sometimes longer with more pernicious organisms.

If he is positively CB from a reputable breeder, and you've been getting feeders from reputable sources, the chances of infestation are pretty low, but not impossible.

IMO, unless there is some overriding reason, annual checks should be sufficient, but we should all make ourselves familiar with the symptoms, treatments, etc.

I agree!

Hello! I'm a veterinary nurse with 10+ years in a small animal and exotic clinic. Chameleons can commonly get pinworms, roundworms, coccidia and giardia. Fecal screens are fairly inexpensive and should be done at an exotic veterinary clinic that has experience with them.

As a preventative measure we ALWAYS recommend our reptiles have a fecal screen done at least every 6 months to ensure we are catching any parasites before they become a problem.

I hope this helped! :)
