Parents scared of roaches

So I am getting some dubais today after looking for quite a while. My mom is pretty much totally against the idea of having roaches in the house. She thinks there going to totally infest and get into the cuboards etc. What are some points I can give to ease her mind... I would keep them out in the garage but they'll die. Do they multiply really that fast? How do I keep them under control?

Dubias can only breed when temps are right.

Unless you live somewhere where it gets super warm (like florida) and tropical, thye cant breed outside of the bin really.

Not to mention, they might stay alive if they get loose, but really wont infest.

I don't think dubia will be able to last long in cold dry Canadian winter air in the home. They need warm, humid conditions and access to some way to hydrate like water droplets or vegetables. Plus they need warm temperatures to be active and breed. They are tropical and cold blooded.

Thanks for the replies. That was helpful. I plan on just kind of "hiding" them in my closet with some gutload and some kind water filled veggie.

Got them! Looks like to large adults and the rest are baby roaches. I cant wait for my guy to see them in his cup :D !

He doesn't seem interested at all in them yet. Hopefully he'll try them out seeing as I just drove through north americas busiest highway to get them

They like being in the dark. Mine not interested either. Put them on their backs so they wriggle more.:D

There is no possible way they could survive in this weather to cold With winter so close. In the summer you could keep them out side if you wanted. But with the weather and everything else everyone one told you that should do the trick.:D

Just tell her they are really big roly-polies.

LOL, yes that is a great tip! Giant rollie pollies.

Dubia are nothing to worry about in colder areas. However, watch the red racers. Those are nasty roaches, trust me! No matter what anyone tells you don't buy them.

Many chameleons do not notice the roaches as feeders because they tend to just huddle together and not move around much. One keeper suggested gluing a stick to the center of a ceramic dish and put the roaches in the dish. They will climb the stick and be more noticable as a prey item. I tried this and most of the time the roaches sit on the stick and don't move either:mad: I am hoping when I get some that are comparable to a medium to large cricket Omar will be more interested.

I keep mine in a large dark plastic bin with a secure top. I cut a hole in the lid and glued screen over the hole so there is ventilation. Search Youtube for videos by the Roach Hut. They have lots of good tips on setting up your bin and sorting. They cannot climb glass or plastic, they don't fly, jump or bite. They do require hot humid conditions to breed and thrive, so they should not be a problem in the cold weather. I have a ceramic heat emitter over the top of my bin to keep them warm. I cleaned out my bin last week and removed all the babies; I put them in a corner near a floor register with the heater over head and just tonight checked their food and water and there has to be like a hundred babies in there! Also they don't stink or make noise like crickets.

To the poster who said not to get red racers... why?
