Hi Laurie,

I'm fairly new to the site and planning to buy a chameleon for my son's upcoming 11th birthday. I've been researching all I can for the past four weeks in order to get the right habitat setup and we've planned for everything from the cage itself to the correct lighting as well as a misting system, live plants and we've even planned for when to go buy the first batch of crickets to start gut-loading.

My son's birthday is actually on Friday, 10/22, and the plan is to have everything setup by Wednesday, 10/20, then order the chameleon on Thursday, 10/21, for a birthday day arrival. I've even taken Friday, 10/22, off of work so I can be available to receive the chameleon.

However, I'd noted one breeder did not ship on Thursdays and coming across your message I wanted to inquire as to whether or not this is a common practice that breeders generally avoid and why? Obviously having the chameleon arrive on a certain day is far less important than having him arrive healthy so I will adjust the plan accordingly if needed but just wanted to understand what breeders experience when shipping on Thursdays.

Thanks in advance for your insight.

Man that stinks I can see how frustrating that can be.

Hopefully all works well.

Well, we have been having a good time. Not to mention the hours on the phone trying to find at least one person that could tell us where they were at and where they were going. If you are looking for something fun to do to pass the time, I highly recommend this......

Hello and welcome. I spent time in your area when I went to Iowa State. I liked Ames.

A lot of companies & people, like me, won't ship on thursday just on the very unlikely chance that something will go wrong. UPS would not have delivered my package on Saturday. So you would have 2 babies in a box from Thursday until sometime Monday. Chances of them making it alive are not anything I am willing to risk. Just a need for a lot of us to feel safe shipping.
As it is my babies will have been in a box from Wednesday to Friday, still longer than I want but at least not life threating. It is all up to the individual and what comfort level they want/need.

I would ask for a Wed. ship date with a Thursday delivery. What risk it. It would be pretty sad if your son received a dead chameleon on Monday and I've seen it happen before on here. Also here's a link to help you to prepare for the arrive of your new cham. https://www.chameleonforums.com/blo...-keepers-young-veiled-panther-chameleons.html

Laurie keep us updated on your quads.

And just when I thought this couldn't get any better.......Laurie has been to the airport and is now at the UPS store trying to find them. Tracking says they are in Havre out for delivery, but we have yet to find the box.........

I am really sorry for you and your future chameleon Laurie! Maybe he/she will be Ok when you will finally receive it!! :S

Yup. and finally is the correct term. We are both exhausted after this adventure, not to mention the chams!!! Laurie says they look good, and have requested not to ever fly again...... This was my first time shipping animals out, and to be truthful, I don't care to do it again. Realistically, I do know that I will, but just don't want too.....

The quads are in the house and are ok. After the tracking said they were in Havre, UPS in Havre said they were not here. A call to UPS central and great Falls, they located which driver had them and I was able to go pitch them up in the parking lot of a restaurant.

But my day isn't over yet, my sister just called and my brother in law is at the hospital being prepped for emergency surgery.

A good example of why you don't use a box twice..... or why it's a good idea to make a good effort to remove all previous shipping stickers.

There were no stickers on the box other than the stamp for "live animal" and the shipping label printed off and correctly adhered to the box. The tracking number on the box, ups, and shipping co all matched the entire time. There was never any additional tracking numbers on the box.......

If I were you I would use the Express Mail by the postal service next time...

It's good to not make assumptions, right? :)

I would if that were am option but the post office here can not do overnight in or out of havre. I live in a tiny town 30 miles south of canada.

Kevin even UPS could not explain to us why they found "extra" tracking numbers. If there were ever any on the box they were gone prior to UPS giving the box to me. Last night Franie & I were on the phone with UPS at the same time. One agent assured her the box would be returned to her this morning while the other agent was assuring me the box would be here to me. Then today I was at the airport when the UPS plane arrived. After sorting it the ups guys said my box was not there. about 10 minutes later they scanned it in. This package had a curse on it. I think it was because Franie didn't really want to give Mork & Mindy to me.

Also my brother in law is out of surrey and ok but will need more surgery in a few days. So I think life is settling down and I WILL GO TO BED.:):):)
