Petco Chameleon

Sadly to admit, I bought a female veiled from petco and I’m really paranoid. Her names Venus and she visually looks ok and acts ok but I’m just scared. I’ve been reading posts about the sickness and bad health of store bought chameleons and I just wanted to know what to look out for and what to do in case of illness. She’s really young (a month) and I’ve only had her for about a week. My husbandry is up to par and she’s been hand feeding, drinking and pooping fine. I’m just really scared something will happen to her, she’s my first cham and I’m already very attached. The petco I bought her from was brand new and the store manager said to have only had her for about a week. Is my worrying warranted or do you guys think she’ll be alright with proper care? This is her sleeping.

Hey, if she is eating and pooping well, her pic looks good, too. You might have gotten lucky with a Petco Cham. ;) Just keep a close eye on her bowl movements and diet, and if something looks strange post on the health clinic about it. There are plenty of experienced keepers who can give you a quick opinion on it!

Alrighty, thanks for the reassurance I really need it after seeing all those threads.

I also got my first cham at Petco and he’s what got me into this hobby and love of chameleons. I was a lucky one and he’s always been a great eater and very healthy, I also got him at that age so just be on the look out but as previously said she looks good to me! Here my guy now all grown up he threat posed me upside down lol

Whoa fantastic colors, I hope mine grows to be as healthy, big and colorful as him!!

I would wait a year or so at least to be able to say they're fine coming from those stores. Veileds are hardy animals and can often hide underlying problems for awhile. I hope they are fine for you guys, but I would never recommend getting from those places. There's always the chance they are carrying parasites that have been kept under control for the time being.

Yes very true. I had fecals done and all just to be sure. Mine is a year and 2 months now. But yes NEVER recommend from Petco.

Hello, My two girls were also purchased from Petco. The lady sold me on a small glass terrarium and said the two could live together indefinitely! After having the girls for about a week and looking up ACTUAL facts about veileds, I started buying the correct cages and setups for the females. The people at petco are only interested in selling and do not care about what happens after....

On a side note, the Petco I was talking about had a guy working for a while who knew a lot about reptiles (because he owned them) and gave me great advice on feeding cups and foliage. He was fired for giving away too many crickets :( If you wanted 100, you probably got closer to 150. Between him and the wonderful knowledge on this site, my girls are now well over 2 years old and are happy and healthy.

As long as your veiled is eating, drinking, and pooping....you will probably be just fine

The problem with petco isn't so much the people, but the corporation. The system only sees numbers, they hustle live animals. We all have bought from them at some point, but knowing better, it's never a good idea
