Petsmart...

Told me to feed my veiled EVERYDAY. This contradicts everything I've been told/have read. I'm so confused. I bought Ezra some wax worms, since he's so thin :(

How old is your chameleon? That's not bad advice at all, depending on several things. You could still feed an adult chameleon every single day, just smaller quantities. Like sometimes my boy Daedalus will get one or two feeders every day, and then the next week will only eat 3-4 times, and then every other day, etc. So the schedule varies, but it won't hurt him to eat every day.

it depends if he still growing then you can feed averyday. and if hes full grown then evry other day its fine so he wont get fat.:D

I don't know how your pet smart is compared to mine, but the guy in the reptile department didn't even know how to handle a chameleon properly let alone give you any directions on care. I find them not too knowledgable in my oppinion...I think everyone is a little different, and I'm still a newbie, (have had my little guy for six months) but for my panther chameleon I feed him two days on and one day off and have three different insects that I rotate out. at the moment I feed him crickets, butterworms and silks(just ordered some horn worms to switch out for the silks just to change it up a little). I dust with Repashy's calcium plus on every feeder at every feeding(it makes it easy :p) Since I've started doing this schedual, he's more likely to eat when he doesn't think there is such an abundance of food and get picky. But like I said, I'm still a newbie so I'm sure there are more people with more experience on this subject:D

Is it young? as they get to be adult sized I think feeding is really a matter of preference. I feed both mine 3 days of the week. But I could feed them everyday, i just get a better feeding response from them when I feed them a bit more food/less often.

You know some places will give you advice like that to make a sale and meet their numbers but not everywhere is like that. For example, my best friend works at Petsmart(hopefully I will be too pretty soon!) and she is an experienced and knowledgeable person when it comes to reptiles. Has experience with 8 different reptiles that she owns and does almost everything by the book. I myself know a bit having experience with 5 different reptiles that I have owned. Most people who get those jobs dont have that experience and it really doesnt help considering they are just told what should be sold for what animal. But the feeding schedule like he said is correct. I would feed him(if at all possible) three times a day. Making sure the last one is about 3 hours away from lights out to help digest. Jannb one of our good senior members stated on another thread that for juveniles up to the age of about 5-6 months I believe should be fed three times a day then cut back on feeders if it is a female. Hope this helps you!

Ezra is not juvenile for sure. I fed him 5 waxworms tonight. He GOBBLED them. Then again. Lord knows how long he went without eating. Thanks for everyone's input. I Really appreciate it.

I really like this idea. TID is a good schedule( like, m,w,f or something)

Smaller quantities each day makes sense too :)

Since you found this guy (and he is an adult/sub-adult male) I would feed every day for a while to help him put on a little weight. I wouldn't use the wax worms too much as they are fatty (you wouldn't try to gain weight with only fast food right?) Use them as a treat and use regular feeders that have been gutloaded really well most of the time. Crickets, roaches, silkworms, hornworms, butterworms, etc. are all good.

Oh wow. Petsmart lady told me wax worms were good to help him gain weight. Thanks for telling me! I fed him 3 large crickets and 1 wax worm for supper tonight. He's doing awesome. Drinking everytime I mist him :) he never leaves the very top of his cage, though. Do most veileds move really slowly??

Chameleon care is such a problem with petsmart. As an employee, I am going to write a detailed letter to corporate about their care guidelines, employee education, and age of chameleons being sold to customers. Keep in mind when complaining to petsmart employees or managers that there is frequently NOTHING that they can do to help, as they are bound by the rules of care set by corporate.

If a chameleon is very sick, the best a petsmart will be able to do is take it to their banfield vet -- and I'm not confident on their experience with reptiles at all.

I can't fix everything about my employer, but I can try my best to improve the health of chameleons sold at their stores. I think the fact that this very popular chameleon board is cautioning against purchasing a chameleon at petsmart's stores, and thereby causing money loss, could hold some weight with them.

You guys can help me too. Write a concise, brief, and polite letter stating your concerns about chameleon care and/or employee education at petsmart. Explain why they should change their care guidelines by stating that they are losing sales to you and others whom you are cautioning against petsmart's chameleons.

I will be snail-mailing a letter to corporate, as well as going through our internal comments system. Here is the address of corporate: http://help.petsmart.com/contact-us/contact-corporate.shtml

You could also go through the help desk online thing, but I worry that your comments wouldn't make it higher up through this. But better to try. http://www.petsmart.com/helpdesk/index.jsp?display=store&subdisplay=contact&stillHaveQuestion=yes

I wish we had some people who knew what they were talking about at ours! I feel bad for the poor things everytime they have a vield or jackson...they always look real unhealthy :( When I was just learning, I knew way more than they did! And mind you, I'm still learning:p

Yeah, I noticed they had a very sad looking Cham there when I went. Honestly, I feel bad for the employees they put out there. They just grab some random person who normally works in the dog food dept and say *poof* You are now a reptile expert. I'm gaining a lot of knowledge from this forum and I'm hoping that the Vet on Friday will tell me the rest of what I need to know :)
