Plants in the Enclosure...Veiled

Hey guys, just curious as too what plants you guys have had success with in your enclosure, i have no stepped up to one yet because I am doing research and I would love to have your opinions :) From what I have read so far, Ficus Benjamina and the one with flowers on it are pretty good. Let me know what you think :D

My ficus benjamina is doing really great with all the mistings, and its thin branches are climbing up the cage wall, which I really like. I have a coleus in there too, but it's not doing as well. Partially because it fell over and broke half the plant, but also Jean-luc likes pooping on it, lol. My pothos vine really likes being in there too!

I want to get a Schefflera arboricola for him (Umbrella plant). But be careful, make sure it's the one with that scientific name because I noticed another Schefflera in the "live plants" section that's poisonous.

I really like the Pothos it seems to hold the water for a long time and also does quite well inside. The Ficus and Schefflera also do great indoors. The Hibiscus is a favorite of the veileds but needs allot of light so your need to use hibiscus outside or have a couple to rotate from inside to outside for sun.

You might find my blog for new keepers linked below helpful.

How much did the ficus benjamina cost you and where did you get it?

It was $15 for a smaller one, at a local garden store. I think the price was worth it, it is only a foot and a half tall right now but it'll grow and it looks nice. You could also check walmart, fred meyer, Lowe's and Home depot. Just make sure not to get a ficus elastica, I made that mistake. Fortunately I removed it before Jean-luc could get hurt!

My pothos was from fred meyer and it was only $7.

My veiled actually got an eye infection from a ficus when she was a lot younger. I know a lot of people still use them without problems but I wont use it again it was very scary.both of her eye turned black.

My veiled loved eating the hibiscus flowers, so much that the plant would end up dying.. LOL :p I just purchased a new Ficus so far so good.

Ficus Benjamina and Pothos (Devils Ivy/Epipremnum aureum)

Both do very well

Thank you guys for all of your experience, I was just at my local Milagers and a good sized ficus benjamina was like $21.00 and the hibiscus is 25% off atm so i may go back and get a hibiscus. Did not know that pothos were good to be honest but thank you so much! I will go in a few minutes to check it out again. Also when i get this plant, should i re plant it in top soil just to make sure it is okay for her? I do not want my baby to die lol that would be a plus ;) lol

I re planted with an Organic soil / Potting mix, also make sure to make clean up the hibiscus.

Okay, because I know that the fertilizer is not the best thing for a chameleon lol how do you normally go about cleaning the hibiscus? and just the roots or the entire plant itself?

I took the plant out the soil and watered it down till it was just the roots, I cleaned the plant with soap & water in a bucket, I dipped the plant in it upside down but not the roots. I then re planted into a new pot with the Organic soil.

So am I washing all the plant with soap and water? including the leaves and such?

You are using the water and soap for JUST the LEAVES & BRANCHES because thats what your Chameleon will come into contact with, the roots you are just watering down until all old fertilizer/soil is out & then you use the Organic Soil to re plant. :)

*REMEMBER TO WASH OFF THE WATER AND SOAP, WITH CLEAN WATER*

Yes clean the plant extensively the nurseries cover them in pesticides around here. I thought hosing a plant down 2 or 3 times could clean most of the off however pesticides were still even visible! The more you clean those leaves and branches the better!

Also I purchased a hibiscus thinking it would be all right under the lights of the enclosure however you will need atleast an additional plant light if you are not exposing the hibiscus to a good ammount of light! Almost killed one before. Good luck!
