My chameleon is eating some of the dirt i have in the cage for the plant. She is a 6 month veiled chameleon female of course. How many crickets should she get a day.

my male used to eat the dirt out of his plant also.. i think its okay as long as she dosent eat a lot of it and that there are NO pestacides in the soil. She may be eating the soil to make up from some nutrients shes not getting. You do dust her crickets before feeding them to her right? and make sure they are gut-loaded also.

ummm.. i use orange cubs that you get from the pet store. And celery. But there are soo many other things ppl use also. im sure they will chime.

I just put extra veggie scraps in there with the crickets. Celery, carrots, apple peels. Do not use avacado or potato. Avacado are toxic to pretty much all reptiles and potatoes have been known to cause gout.

If you look up posts on gutloading there are recipes with yogurt and babyfood and you make this whole meal just for the crickets.

I put in various items to gutload crickets, such as collard greens, R-Zilla cricket drink w/ calcium, shredded up carrots, these are just to name a few. Treat your crickets like a pet

oh...got it backwards. Sorry everyone. This is how I learn things...:D

So why don't we use potatoes, I forget?

i say 5 to 7 med crix.
Dirt eating is pretty normal.
you have 2 choice:
1. let her eat dirt. but to lessen the risk of impaction, sift the top soil. So, no rocks, fertilizer, or wood barks laying around to be accidentally ingested.

2. cover the dirt with rocks (the one that are obviously too big for him to eat).
or cover the soil with white plastic canvas.
(I opt for the 2nd one. mainly because Dr Tom Greek- my exotic vet- suggest me to do it)

yes potatos are very high in phosphrous, you can do sweet potatos. i use the yellow liquid cubes and a monster cricket formula. seems to be working well for me.

Yes, Correct, they do eat dirt sometimes. I give mine 10-25 Crickets (3/4) everyday. He doesnt eat it but make sure there is NO fertilizer or pesticide, on or in the soil because that will kill them. Also, when gutloading, i use Carrots, Turnips, Radishes, and Romaine lettuce. Also, i have Armstrong's Cricket gutload and Cricket Chow. They should look really fat in the abdoman.

See why I get so pissed off about all the information I get. :mad:I was told by the guy I bought my veiled from that potatoes are a good gut loader. I was told the other day though that I shouldn't gut load with potatoe.
Whenever I think I'm getting somwhere with my research and knowledge on chameleons, turns out theres somebody contradicting what I've learned.
Thats why this site kicks ass. So much usefull knowledge here.
