Hi, my mum has asked us to look after her chameleon while she's on holiday. The chameleon started laying eggs last month and hasn't been right ever since. She hasn't really eaten since neither. She has been laying on the bottom of her cage with her eyes closed for a couple of days now and when we picked her up to check her over we've discovered 2 little holes in her skin along her back. I'm really worried seeing this. Has anyone got any idea what could be wrong plz?? I'm going to the vets tomorrow but I'm really concerned she's hardly moving and really don't look good!

Okay, there is nothing you can do until you go to the vet. The vet may have to do surgery. Unless YOUR a vet... Nothing you can do. This happened to me, I took her to the vet immediately and he got fixed and was fine. Hopefully Your cham is okay.

She looks egg bound that means she can't lay her eggs. You should call a vet today. Does your Mom have a vet she goes to? If not try to locate one that knows about chams.

For now get a 5 gallon bucket of moist wet sand, make it about 1/3 full. Put the cham in there and leave her alone to see if she lays. You can check on her but try not to let her see you. You can scoop out a tunnel for her and make sure the sand won't collapse on her. She will dig head first but will back in to lay eggs. She looks very tired so I would put her by the tunnel you dig for her.

Let me know how it goes. Good Luck.

What about the holes???

Ok I've got sand so will make it wet and lay her in there now. thanks I will try anything. What do you think about the holes thou? I Was very shocked when I saw them.

I have no idea about the holes. Could crickets have bitten her? If she didn't need privacy for laying I would say get pictures, but let's wait until she is finished with laying eggs - that is more important right now.

Those "holes" look like insect damage. A little neosporin on them will help for now. Main thing is she appears weak and egg bound. This is a common problem with female reptiles if they are not given what they need when it comes time to lay eggs. A male is not needed, eggs will be produced anyway.

Laurie gave you good advice on what to do.

urgent

Yes, mama's are VERY weak after laying. Let her rest when she is done and keep a good eye on her. When she is done, she still needs lots of water. Don't leave her with crickets in the cage. If you have a dubia or some other worm, leave that with her. Keep her lights on during the day. I hope she does well.

Don't make the sand wet...just moist enough to hold a tunnel when she digs in it.

I will be very surprised if she lays any eggs now. If she hasn't been right since she laid the last batch was laid its more than likely she has retained eggs and/or is eggbound. You need to get her to the vet's ASAP. The marks are likely insect bites. When the chameleon is that sick it doesn't kick the insects off, ike it should and seems to not notice that it's being chewed on.

Good luck.

Coco died..

Hi,
Coco my mums chameleon has died. I didn't even have chance to get her to the vets that following morning after speaking to you guys. I want to thank you all for helping me with your advice at a time when I was desperate for answers. Thank you all.

I think she is past the point of laying on her own. She needs a vet or she will pass away. Get her in asap
