no i wasn't going to feed a spider to my lizard but i could't seem to find if the spider was poisonous or not. I found it in my house and it's called a scorpion spider or a sunshine spider but it doesn't look friendly.:( So please help me out and respond

Mitsio 3.0

I noticed your post history consists of you saying Mitsio 3.0 to alot of threads.

I realized that you use the title for your response, then use the message section to write Mitsio 3.0, perhaps like a signature?

Anyways, thought I'd give you a heads up that this is a pretty confusing way to post.

When people quote you, all they say is Mitsio 3.0 like above.

Your best off to give all spiders a pass. PLENTY of other feeder prey options out there.

edit: duh - if I read the post properly, I'd have known you didnt intend to feed it off

Hi Destiny,

The animal you're describing is a solifugid, or wind scorpion, and they are widely distributed in the United States (including Montana). They are, in fact, arachnids, as are spiders and scorpions. Unlike spiders (all of which are venomous, not poisonous), wind scorpions are not venomous, though they possess a massive set of jaws, similar in power to those of mantids, but much, much, bigger. I have seen one devour a cricket in less than a minute, literally, so, needless to say, though probably not a real threat to your chameleon's strong crunching power, I'd stick with feeding arachnids with less prominent mouths.

I think hes just curious as to if its poisonous and has no intention of feeding it to his lizards.

Anyways it seems Merumontanus answered your question quite well regardless.

I agree, it's best just to stick with the usual menu. But if you really want to do this, at least clip off the mandibles.

I was once told that all spiders are toxic when it comes to feeding chameleons. I trusted the source and have stayed away from the desire to experiment.

Yes, all spiders are venomous, but that doesn't mean they are dangerous if ingested by reptiles. I feed my chameleons small wolf spiders whenever possible, and there are even members on this forum who feed black widows without problems. I do not know whether (and what) reptiles are affected by spider bites, but ingesting them does not seem to pose a problem.

Venoms are amino acid compounds (proteins) and will denature and eventually become inactive once it mixes with digestive acids. If the animal has cuts, possibly caused by mandibles  it may enter the blood stream and have its desired effect.

I just pass on spiders. Who knows what the may do! Although, if my chameleons sees one in the window outside her enclosure she will shoot for it. I just do not personally ever feed spiders.

You folks are missing out. I assure you all your feeder insects have mandibles capable of inflicting wounds to your chameleons mouths. Given that most do not have venom injecting capabilities, I say feed on it's all protein anyways! ;)

Yeah thats what i was wondering. Why do you say that all the time

I'd rather be safe than sorry. I'll not be feeding my cham a spider that could bite and cause a problem. There are plenty other choices.
