Possible respiratory infection? :(

So far tonight (the past 2 hours) i've noticed Karma opening his mouth a lot and he'll only do it when im not around. When i come check on him it'll be open and as i slowly approach him or if he spots me he'll close it and just stare at me like i'm insane or something. I had misted him about an hour before i noticed this and the humidity was at 65% along with the temp at 86 degrees at basking. He hasn't done it for about 20 minutes now and it's a half hour to lights out.
It isn't very far open and there's no excess saliva or anything but there is a noise AS he opens his mouth and he's always made the noise since i got him when he yawns and such. Similar to putting your upper and lower lip together and pulling them apart in the front and not the sides. but he's never "gaped" or anything (think that's what it's called). Other than once when he was basking and i think he was trying to cool down or something.
Not looking for medical opinion just an opinion from an experienced owner or someone who's gone through this with a cham preferably. The downside is i can't afford a vet right now, just spent over 1000 dollars on a root canal. soooooooooooooo i'm screwed if it comes down to that. and of course if he does it longer i'll ahve to take out a loan or something and i'll let you all know how it went.

here's the info and some pics
Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - Male Veiled chameleon, don't know exact age, i'd say between 6-9 months, been in my care almost a month
Handling - Once or twice a week depending on cleaning and such
Feeding - So far just crickets (looking for pet stores near me that sell silk worms/super worms) he eats between 10-12 a day depending. crickets are gutloaded with escarole lettuce, papaya, carrots, oranges, turnip greens.
Supplements -i dust with rep cal calcium no d3 almost every day, flukers calcium with d3 every other tuesday, and rep cal multivitamin every other tuesday.
Watering - i use a dripper system on occasions. mostly just misting and he drinks off leaves. i mist every 2-4 hours, depending how fast the humidity drops and how fast it dries. i mist for about 30 seconds or so, it varies because i mist a few times then pause then mist a little more. somtimes he comes over to me while i mist and drips from the spray he drips straight from leaves as well.
Fecal Description -"normal" brown fecal (best i got) not dry not runny. Urate today and a few days ago was runny. there was one in between that was normal. White urates, he isn't dehydrated. Did not have parasites when i bought him.
History - when i bought him they weren't feeding him very much at all, non dusted crickets about 4-6 a day, i've weened him up to 7 for a few days then 8, a week later we went to 10

Cage Info:
Cage Type - 18x18,36 screen enclosure
Lighting - zoo med dual deep dome lamp with exo terra bulbs. uvb is 26w 5.0 tropical bulb. basking is 50w daylight basking bulb
Temperature - Basking is always between 80-90. currently 87. bottom drops to about 60-70. at night it's between 60-70 throughout enclosure. i use a zoo med thermometer and humidity gauge at basking and a standard outdoor thermometer for the bottom.
Humidity - always between 40-70 currently 45. i mist frequently and use live plants in the enclosure to maintain it.
Plants - I have 2 golden pothos and 1 jade plant in the enclosure
Placement - In my work room near my drawing tablet for my computer so i can always keep an eye on him, i'm blocked by foliage so he cant see me unless i want him to. There are not "high" traffic areas in my house other than the entry way and a small section of the living room and the hallway.
Location - Currently in ohio, not the best place with the stupid weather changes.

Chameleons will also open their mouths to 'release' heat. It is like the reptiles way of sweating.
It's hard to imagine that he would have a respiratory infection with humidity levels between 40-70 and mistings every 2-4 hours for only 30 seconds, but I suppose it is a possibility. Hopefully someone more experienced with respiratory infections can chime in.

add on: don' tknow if this has anything to do with opening his mouth buuuuuuuuuut.......

Yesterday he had an... "accident" while i was cleaning poop from his enclosure, literally just reaching in and grabbing it. he managed to climb to the top of the door and "jump" to the shelf holding his supplies on it. and while doing so he missed. he feel about 5 feet onto carpet, immediately got up and climbed the shelf he so desperately wanted to be on. and then proceeded to stay there for about 10 minutes while i coaxed him back into the cage. it was super scary and i cried...

my thoughts exactly. but a noise accompanied with opening their mouth a lot is said to be early signs of one. i'm a worry wart about my son and my teeth already (that whole root canal thing). so i thought i'd get opinions.

I second that heat is most likely causing it. See is he does it while he isn't basking. Also watch him tonight when he sleeps, see if he is holding his head up and/or making noise breathing.

The noise you would hear while his mouth is open would be more of a wheezing sound as he would be having a harder time breathing and would need to open his mouth to do so.

he always sleeps vertical so it's always technically up. but i have already been observing him for around an hour and he only made noise rustling the leaves to hide for the night. accidentally woke up him just 3 minutes ago... feel like a jerk :(
he hasn't made any noise at all. and yea he only does it while basking. he also will never open his mouth if i'm near him, only when he thinks i'm away. ALTHOUGH I'M ACTUALLY RIGHT BESIDE HIM, HE JUST CAN'T SEE THROUGH LEAVES, MWAUAHAHAH! Well, he can right now because he sleeps in the foliage. it's actually the cutest damned thing i've ever seen. no noise as of yet. i'll be keeping an eye on him for another hour or so though, just to be safe.

is that a bad thing if it's the heat? is 86 degrees too hot for him?

You will notice if his head is pointing up. It will look like he is trying to see something right above him. If you ever gave him a juicy worm you might have noticed him lifting his head up at that point, it would look like the same thing, but he would be sleeping not swallowing.

My guys bask around 88 degrees so 86 shouldn't been too hot. Maybe check and see what the other temperatures in his cage are at and make sure he has a place that he could get to a cool temp if desired.

I'm still assuming it is just the heat and he is fine but keep an eye on him just to be sure.

i think worries just got the best of me again. still perfectly fine. since i didn't wanna wake up the sleeping beauty i decided to back off. i have all day tomorrow to make sure he's still okay. next time he does it i'm going to turn the light off and see if he stops(should have done that in the first place but i'm a dumb dumb). if he doesn't stop i'll be posting on here freaking out again. :p
