Praying Mantis Go Down The Hatch!

mine goes crazy over blue bottle flies.
I fed them mantis as well. I bought the whole sac from the nursery and wait for them to hatch.
grow them a bit and feed the excess while keeping 2 or 4 to mate once again.
I am now culturing painted lady butterfly.
All of them are in coccoon phase and currently waiting for them to turned to butterfly. I'll let some of them mate and feed the excess.

where do you get your mantis?

If I am not mistaken, chameleon in the wild probably would find praying mantis more often than crickets, if any. So, it seems like a natural feeder for them..
imho, Mantis make an excellent pet as well. :) They are very fascinating.

I am trying to google for New Jersey law about praying mantis; but, always cannot find a legitimate link. Anyone has a link for this? I appreciate it.

ignore it - NJ is not a good state at all. I had Mrs. Benevenga call the ****** cops on me when I was a kid for holding a sparkler on the fourth of July. And they gave me a warning. SPARKLERS.

It's an old urban legend about mantis'. My father told me his father told them there was a fine if you killed them. It's jus tthe old Italians knew they were beneficial, and ddnt' want the kids killing them.

Mantises are not as benificial as most benificial insects - they eat about as many good bugs as bad bugs. ladybugs and lacewings are better - they only really eat pests.

Chaeleons love mantids, but I dn't like killing them - they're too much like chameleons! same behavior, hunting style, same creepy look of pseudo-intelligence...
They are the only bugs that really look AT you.

Is there another food item your chameleon goes bonkers for? I mean besides anything that flies, of course.

Fresh moulted White roaches! Homer loves them, just like little chocolates on legs to him!
:D

Eric can you tell me something about them? Are they nocturnal or diurnal? where do they hang out (shrubs/new froilage/tree tops etc)?
Ive fed a few but I prefer not to kill them really, only because there are not too many around my yard lately. If they were around in number....."Smoke those creepy eyed little sticklike suckers!" :D

Animal can become protected if they are indeed endangered.
If mantis become one simply because of the beneficial nature, shouldn't S. Feltiae, BB Flies, silkworm, and lady bug be protected as well?

No way dude! those grubby drunken ladybugs hang out at the glow-worm bar, hittin' on all insects, they're trash.
They get really agro if you call 'lady' bugs though, I guess they feel embarressed.

They dont need protection! :D
