Premature Ch. africanus? GRAPHIC

What does everyone think? This one started to pip yesterday, got his head out and then died. I found him this morning with his head hanging out and his mouth slightly open. He/she is the only one out of 50 to do this.

How much yolk is normally left if any when they start to pip? Take a look at the pic and let me know what your thoughts are. Thanks!

I had one that I had to force out of the egg out of my africanus clutch and while it looked ok at first it ended up being completely blind and wasting away over a week or so. I think it was underdeveloped/premature. FYI many of the others had a noticeable yolk sac when they came out which they absorbed pretty quickly. I was worried about it at first but 4 weeks on now they're doing really well. When did they all hatch out for you?

I only just had the second egg pip, however that one didn't make it out of the egg either. They both died with their noses through the shell, like maybe the egg was to tough to get through. The next one which is sweating now, I will manually force out once popped or at the very least slit the egg more to help out.

That sucks. Hope the rest hatch out well for you. Maybe something has triggered them to hatch before they are supposed to? Temp change, humidity change etc?

It doesnt look to premature to me. At least not the pinkish color that Ive seen in really early hatchers.

I don't think they are premature. I just came home to one fully emerged from the egg and walking around. I will just have to keep an eye on them as they are hatching to make sure they can get out of the egg.

I am totally not even worried anymore. Like I said in the last post one had fully emerged and is doing fine.

I also noticed another had shrunk and was pipping and wasn't sure if it was okay so i picked the egg up and all of a sudden in my palm emerged from the egg, right in my hand! It was so amazing. Here is a pic of that one about 10 seconds after it hatched in my hand and crawled up onto my finger. Sorry for the picture quality.

That's so cute. And he was ok with you holding him? Maybe now you will have like a special bond with him? :D

His instincts kicked in as soon as he was out of the egg and was clearly trying to get away from me. I had another two hatch today, as well.

Glad to see one has made it. Hope the rest hatch fine. Also glad to see there are a few people having success with these.

What an awesome story. The baby is adorable. Congrats on the 3 that's out and hoping the rest all hatch shortly.

Thanks Jann! They all seem to be doing fine! They wouldn't even take fruit flies, because they were to small. The started on Pinheads and Baby mantids.
