Ok, I caught this preying mantis yesterday, I put it in a container with a branch and a few crickets for overnight. I figured on using it as a feeder for my veiled. This morning I found what looks like a egg sack. Can you guys look at the pics and tell me if that is what it is? If so what do I do know? It would be col if it is. Just looking for some input. http://s1177.photobucket.com/albums/x345/JimR1957/preying mantis/

Thanks
Jim

Yeah thats an ootheca. You can go ahead and feed her off and take the ooth and put it in a container and in a few weeks you'll have about 200 mantis nymphs to feed. Really lucky catching her and getting an ooth out of the deal. If you dont want to deal with hatching them out sell it to a forum member thats hatching babies. They are great for newborns....

To cool, I thought it was but just wasn't sure. I was walking across a parking lot and almost stepped on it. What do i feed them when they hatch?

Fruit flies start with the melanogasters. Then after a shed or two they can start eatting the bigger Hydei's. Then if you still want to raise em you could get some blue bottle flies or houseflies. I havent had much luck myself feeding them cricks they love flies.

it looks like a giant asian mantis just incubate the ooth in a warm closet and keep it a little moist dont over moist it like misting it like crazy cut a small piece of sponge off soak it in water and put it in the cup with the ooth

Thats cool. As my username suggests, I LOVE praying mantises. I used to keep them as pets all the time and even now if I ever come across one, Ill catch it and make it a little habitat. I'd hate to see one being used for chameleon food though, lol. D:

They're pretty hard to find too, at least where im at, I would consider yourself very lucky to find one let alone one with eggs.

If I run across a situation like this again I will send it to you. lol

Yeah, I'm jealous of SoCal. Our weather is pretty mild, but not like you guys! The last of my wild mantis females just died outside. You can go ooth hunting and find them everywhere in the winter though!
