Proper way to clean rocks

ok so I have pothos in my Chams enclosure and I was told to put river rocks on top of the soil to prevent the Cham from eating the soil. What are the proper steps on cleaning to avoid pests and other junk getting into the enclosure?

Cleaning rocks.... just put them in. If theres some dirt you can rinse it if you want.

If it helps you sleep you can, but I never do. It won't make a difference.

It's not like the chameleon is going to lick the rocks or try to eat them. Plus, it's nature and that's what the chams are used to.
