Proud rudis mother with offspring

Here's a picture that I happened upon (in situ) yesterday. It's a female Rudis chameleon with a baby that she gave birth to earlier that morning. Just thought I'd share.

That is a darling picture!! I know very little about rudis mother's, will they also eat their babies? I have always heard jacksons will eat their young.:(

Such a cute pic, she doesn't seem to be stressed at all about the little one on her back. I love live bearing chams :)

Usually it is a male who eats the babies. Some female jax seem to recognize that is probably not a good idea. I attribute it to the whole pregnancy thing. No one wants to work for 6-9 months and waste it all in 20 seconds. I have seen pics of little baby jax sitting on top of a male, also. It's a crapshoot.

Lazy Boy - Thank you, I appreciate the feedback :)

Cait0420 - Take good care of them--they can be very, very sensitive.

Laurie - So far I haven't witnessed cannibalism--both sexes seem to ignore the babies.

Rodcham - Yes, it's like a birthday present :)

Junglefries - I agree with your post. My female Jackson's have never (to my knowledge) consumed their babies. I keep gravid females separately though, so, I can't comment on any males proclivity to potentially eat them.

Caits babies are from me, and I had a lot of success raising them. My first clutch I believe we're preemies, as a lot of them were born with congenital defects. I lost 50% of them in the first few weeks. My second clutch was born and all the babies were big, healthy and beautiful. I had a 100% success rate with raising the second batch. I find as long as you separate all the babies they are fairly easy to raise

I raised quite a few regular Jacksons back in the day and never caught anybody munching on the little ones. They didn't even seem to pay any attn to them. I'm sure there are exceptions but for the most part I'd say it's a rare thing.

JosieJobo - I haven't entered it into the contest, maybe I'll do that :)

Ponders - Thanks for the kind words!

Christineacero - Very interesting--perhaps the clutch one of my female's gave birth to that dropped like flies was also premature--the babies did seem like they never really broke out of the fetal position for more than a few minutes, and they just couldn't get things going.

Sandrachameleon - Thank you!
