Pygmy Chameleons

Hey everyone,

I was thinking about maybe getting a few pygmy chams. I want some more, but I don't have the space for another veiled or a panther, so I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were.

More importantly, WHERE can I get them?

I'm getting a pair to start off with, but I am already talking to some other members about buying their babies. They already have cb colonies and their eggs are hatching in around four weeks. If I had more money, I would be buying more though. And you can keep a 1.2 group in a 12x12x18 exo terra. That's what I will have mine in. :)

That would be perfect because I wouldn't want to get them until June anyway! Money! lol. What do you feed them? I'm still a little shakey on my knowledge which is another reason I'm waiting, but can't you use an aquarium too? You don't necessarily need the height, right?

Nope. You can use an aquarium. I don't know how long LLL Reptile will have them for sale though. You feed them small feeders, fruit flies, itty bitty crickets.

Fun! What are their requirements in regards to light, heat, foliage, stuff like that? I'd just like to hear a members opinion. ^_^

Light-They don't NEED UVB but people believe it doesn't harm to have it. A used 5.0 bulb from your big chameleons or just a 2.0 would be more then enough.
Heat-No higher then 80, so they really don't need basking bulbs.
Foilage-They like lots of plants. They're shy, so they need lots to hide in. And of course, sticks and vines to climb on.

I want them so bad now, but I have to wait a bit. Grrr. Why can't I just have ALL of the chameleons. haha

HAHAHA! Yes, true.

I don't know if you guys do this, but when I get my mind on something (right now it's the pygmies) all I do is research, research, research, research, and research. They look so cute. I've been looking at the pygmies and dart frogs, but I just love chams. It'd also seem like fun to breed some pygmies!

Hopefully Petsmart/Petco will have the $1/Gallon sale soon!

For those that keep pygmies can you give me a pro/con list? I'm just trying to get as much info together as possible.

Also, are there different safe plants for them or is the list on the forum good to go by? I only ask because those plants can get pretty big and for a 10 gallon, I don't want them to be TOOOOO crowded by overzealous pothos. Hahaha.

Pros: SO CUTE!! You can keep them in groups, they don't need as much equipment (no basking light and I used old UVB lights from my bigger guys). Their tanks can be super pretty because you can plant them very natural and tropical looking. It's kind of a fun game to get people who come over to try to find them.

Cons: No handling. They are too small and too easily scared by an enormous hand trying to grab them. You can't always see them. It's amazing how long you can look for them without actually seeing them sometimes. Not all the time, but there are definitely days when I just have to assume they're in there because they can't get out. Sometimes food small enough can be a challenge to get. They mostly only come wild caught so you don't know how old they are and they don't have very long lifespans. If they start showing signs of illness there's really not much at all you can do for them because they're so small. They're not very colorful, if that's what you're into. If you live someplace hot it can be a challenge to keep their tank under 80.

Honestly, they are one of my favorite species!! I adore them for being just so very small and adorable. Watching them hunt is the cutest thing ever. I really love figuring out their moods and what they are up to because they're not quite so obvious as bigger species. Sitting facing downward on a stick means they are hungry and waiting to hunt. They usually pick their favorite spots and go to them in turn over the course of the day. I dunno, I think they're fascinating and just too cute. I recommend them. ;)
