Quad vs. deremensis

you would be extremely surprised at the temp in DOWNTOWN toronto, we have a little barrier there, our winters never get within 10 degrees of how cold it is just kilomters outside the city, and the summers get so extreme, we have had days where it gets up to 45 celcius (about 115 fahrenheit) and stays there for days along with the deathly humidity that stays in the 80s constantly, ive been to texas many times, the heat there is different its dry, when you get that hot, and its humid, its even worse than dry

I'm sure you do have days when it gets hot there. I grew up in Detroit so I know how nasty a hot humid day can be, but I thnk the reason a quad wont do well here as opposed to up north is the length of hot months compared to Toronto. We've already had a dozen days over 80 here since January. Its going to be 75F tomorrow and its not even spring. We wont have another day below 70 after the first of April until it hits October (if we're lucky) . June, July, and August are looking like they will all be average 100F with nighttime lows in the 90s. If you require average temps in the 60s for your quads you will go broke trying to maintain those temps unless you have a dedicated AC for your cham room and even then you will have a huge bill. I just want to point out that a lot of keepers in southern areas have not had good luck keeping those so its worth mentioning.

If it gets that warm there for you how do you keep them then??

I dont. Thats my point. Deremensis will be ok with minimum of mid 70s and highs in low 80s which i can maintain through the summer months. Quads will die after a couple of months with those temps. They need nighttime drops in the 60s which I cannot do unless I take extra measure like a dedicated room with its own unit. Its difficult to get to the low 70s during the hotter months.

Thats cool. I'm not trying to rain on your parade or anything. If you got one and had it die I would rather have said something that might have avoided that altogether as opposed to sit back and hear about it later. If you do get a quad let me know how it goes. I've wanted one for a long time but did not want to try and sacrifice one just to prove everyone else wrong after being told how dificult it is here. After all that, Deremensis is my vote :D

Well thanks for you vote lol :D but my house is set to 74 F, you still think that's to hot for them at night it gets to be around 60-65 F depending if my fan is on.

i keep both quads and derms and i keep them the same, around 70 with a small basking site of about 80. lots of humidity.
and i hate to pick but if i had to.....i love my quads
but that dosent mean my deremensis arnt loved ;)

I keep both also, and live in Quebec. I find the deremensis slightly hardier and they can tolerate warmer temps as long as they are well hydrated. My quads have to go in the basement in the summer. I just keep the deremensis in the shade in summer, but inside at night because lots of cats around.

Thanks for your vote! What temp u keep your quad at?

The highest temp is 75 for the quads. They get stress colors any higher. I have kept deremensis up to 90 (came back from work and that was the room temp) and they were fine, but I was not comfortable so I moved them to a cooler room.

Ok and without the light it's 75 F what do I do to make it cooler once I put the light on?

you do have more consistent heat, but we have 2 extremes, it goes from winter to summer, vice versa very quickly, its 65 degrees today. We have CONSISTENT 110 degrees throughout july, very few days going below that. In august we get abit of a break it will go down to 90 but it still is consistent 100. They do fine, i just hydrate them alot i only have 1 quad though. this is my first summer living alone so i will probably have to save up an AC. I wont really need a big one, because my apartment is ridiculously small. The chams themselves i find have no prob with the temp, but in july i literally spray for 5 mins every 2 hours, and even with the humidity, water is gone in 20 mins. The problem is my crested geckos, i have 20 adults cresties, and il have up to 80 juvinile geckos at a time, and when it gets above 85, i get large mortality. So i need AC for them. The quads are fine in the heat though as long as they are in the shade and VERY well hydrated and misted.

EDIT: my house wass also afew degrees cooler than it is outside
