Random female aggression towards male

I have two flap-neck chameleons.. One male, one female. Both have been fine in the same cage but keep their distant and not bothering each other.

Today alone, and were not sure where this spurred from... The female has been slapping my male to the bottom of the cage. She's done it in total now about 6-7 times in the 4-5 hrs I've been home from work. My boyfriend said she'd don'e 3-4 during the day while I was working.

16L x 16W x 30H
There's a vine that spiral down to the bottom hitting each side wall, two plants on each side wall and a hideway with plants on so they can go hide.

Is it time to separate them or will this pass?
 
She is the darkest green. Like a forest green. She doesn't hiss that I can notice but she does rock back and forth and lunges at him which knocks him down. My male was also walking all over the cage, which is something he usually doesn't do. He usually doesn't evade her space but he was all over the place today.

Right now he is a bright yellow, green and is near the bottom, has moved for a few hours. She is a slight dark, green and not puffy.. just there. She hasn't puffed up for an hour now.. Especially since my male has really been moving around.
 
Now my boyfriend just built a big ol' cage that doubles the size they are in, maybe more.. Could the cage they are in be too small now and they more spots to hide and be away from each other.

The pet place we got them that sales exotic pets said they'd be fine in the same cage since they both were youngins' when we put them both in it.
 
They are 8-9 months at most.

The exotic pet store said they came from the same batch... I am not sure if that means they are siblings but that is what we were told.
 
Did she display bright yellow spots on a green background recently?
It's a mating season for them this time of year.
 
You will need a proper egg laying container in her cage soon. It should be an opaque container at least 12" deep x 12" x 8" but bigger is better. It should be filled with washed playsand that is just moist enough to hold a tunnel. If you don't provide one in time she can become eggbound and die. Don't let her see you watching her when she is digging the hole. The male needs to be in a separate cage ASAP.
You will need to get an egg incubating container ready too and a place figured out where you can incubate the eggs.

You could temporarily divide the bigger cage or put the male in one cage and the female in the other for now. In the wild they can move very far away from each other...in captivity a cage can't give them that option.

Pet stores often don't know what they are talking about. They aren't young now...they're sexually mature. Do you know about supplementing? Feeding/gutloading the insects? Appropriate temperatures? Do you have a UVB light? What kind of light are you using for basking? Do you mist and use a dripper?

We are thinking of duplexing it since they are both 6in long each... and I can put in a pot for the female to bury.

My boyfriend is wondering if we have two females and not one male, one female. Is there a way to distinctively know genders?

We have the correct lamps and temperatures. That we did look up and research to be sure. We have the double light day/night one..

Edit: We bought the chameleon starting kit when we got both of them.
 
Some species of the delepis (flap neck) group have tarsal spurs on their heels....don't know what species you have.

If you want to be sure you have the husbandry right please answer the questions in the how to ask for help thread at the top of the health forum. Please be specific about everything.

By day/night one, do you mean they have a light on at night? If so, turn it off at night and give them complete darkness. They might not be sleeping properly otherwise. Regardless of the genders they still need to be seperated, completely out of each other's sight. Even 2 females will have dominance issues, there's always an alpha.

Looking at the kit again - it's a UVB + heat lighting kit by Zoo Med...

We just put them in their new bigger cage which means we can put a temporary divider in it to separate them.
