Just got my 16wk old male red bar home xx. We had to travel about 45 mins in the car and he's in a completely new environment. I know he's not going to be skipping but I hate that he's just totally still and looks scared stiff. What can I do to help xx

Welcome to the forum and chameleon ownership.

Well let's talk about his living conditions. I know this is asking for a lot, but if you give me as much of this info as you can, I will look for any problems. Most likely it will just take him a few days to adjust. But if there is a problem, now is the best time to find it.

Chameleon Info:
Your Chameleon - The species, sex, and age of your chameleon. How long has it been in your care?
Handling - How often do you handle your chameleon?
Feeding - What are you feeding your cham? What amount? What is the schedule? How are you gut-loading your feeders?
Supplements - What brand and type of calcium and vitamin products are you dusting your feeders with and what is the schedule?
Watering - What kind of watering technique do you use? How often and how long to you mist? Do you see your chameleon drinking?
Fecal Description - Briefly note colors and consistency from recent droppings. Has this chameleon ever been tested for parasites?
History - Any previous information about your cham that might be useful to others when trying to help you.

Cage Info:
Cage Type - Describe your cage (Glass, Screen, Combo?) What are the dimensions?
Lighting - What brand, model, and types of lighting are you using? What is your daily lighting schedule?
Temperature - What temp range have you created (cage floor to basking spot)? Lowest overnight temp? How do you measure these temps?
Humidity - What are your humidity levels? How are you creating and maintaining these levels? What do you use to measure humidity?
Plants - Are you using live plants? If so, what kind?
Placement - Where is your cage located? Is it near any fans, air vents, or high traffic areas? At what height is the top of the cage relative to your room floor?
Location - Where are you geographically located?

Leave it alone, give it its space, feed him once a day in the late morning, and in a week or two try to give him feeders with your hand, oh a give him a lot of hiding places it its cage so he feels safe

Hi! Have you put him in his setup? Make sure he has some cover/leaves/branches/tree and leave him alone in a place that doesn't have too much traffic to feel things out for a while.

I'm
Trying to work out how to upload a pic x. I think I've made a good job of his viv x. Will upload. We've only been back half hour so I know I'm stressing over nothing xx

It's good that you're stressing - not good for you, obviously, but you are evidently someone that wants to make sure that their new chameleon is going to be okay.

Laurie is an extremely experienced member so please follow her advice and fill out the form that she posted, that way we will know that you have everything set up correctly and your new chameleon will be thriving in no time.

Lights went out and has his eyes closed so hopefully snoozing x. As apposed to not breathing :( x. I'm going to do the form

Make sure his feeders are appropriately sized and he will want more than 3 a day. At that age they can eat anywhere from 10-15+ each day.
Welcome to the forums, fab place to learn.
Kath.

Here are a couple things to look at, you need to dust his feeders with plain calcium every day, twice a month with calcium +d3, and twice a month with vitamins/minerals.
The other part of feeding him is making sure his feeders are well gutloaded with greens, like collard, mustard, veggies like carrots, red bell peppers, zucchini squash & sweet potato. I will give you a link for gutloading. But that is sufficient to get you started.

The hoppers are good, just gut load as I said above. But he needs variety, don't wait until he gets older, start now if you can. Others things you can feed him include silkworms, superworms, dubia roaches, crickets, that is all I can think of at this time. I also don't know what food options you have available in the UK. For a treat I feed house fly's. Chams love anything that fly's.

You need to offer him a lot more to eat. He needs to eat every day, and he should be consuming 20 appropriately
sized feeders. Make sure the feeders are something he can eat size wise. Try to watch him feed without him seeing you watching him eat.

Misting 3 times a day it good, but you need to mist long enough that he will have humidity in his cage. The dripper is what he should see as a drinking source. You want to see him drink. Place the dripper so it will drip on the leaf of a plant, so your boy can learn to lick the water off the leaves.

His cage is a good size for now. You said you have a mercury bulb that gives the uv and heat . Be careful as mercury vapor bulbs can get very hot. Is you bulb a UVB or just a uv? He must have a uvb bulb. He might develop MBD with out the proper light. You will need a way to monitor the temp in his cage. If it is to hot he could get burned, if it is too cold, he may not be able to digest his food properly.

Now after all this I will put in a link with a care sheet for a panther. You will have more questions, and we will get you answers. If you aren't learning you are not doing the best for your guy, and I can already tell your guy is going to steal your heart, just like all mine do with me.:):)

Talk to you soon,
Laurie

PS, we need a name for your guy, I can't keep calling him a little nameless baby.:):):):):)
