hi do they produce suffecient uva and uvb for a veiled cham? also what other bulbs produce suitable amounts of uva AND uvb

LIGHTING- This is a huge area of concern to a chameleon’s health. UVB light helps with absorption of calcium to create strong bones. UVB also aids in the absorption and production of D3. Without proper UVB light a chameleon can develop MBD (Metabolic Bone Disease). The most fool proof light on the market is the Reptisun 5.0. studies have found it superior to the Reptiglo 5.0 for chameleons. Do not purchase the compact bulb. These have been known to cause eye problems, such as photo-kerato-conjunctivitis. Lights should be kept on for 10-12 hours a day. Chameleons can only absorb the UV from these lights close up. The maximum effective range is about ten inches. I have personally used the latest lighting on the market with great success, the Mercury Vapor Bulbs. They are an all in one, both heat and UVB output. The maximum effective range of these bulbs is over 12 inches. As far as temperature goes, Veiled’s are a little warmer about 95 basking temperature or what I call the “hot spot”. The “hot spot” temperature can be acquired using standard house light bulbs ranging from 45-75 watts. A household bulb admits UVA light that stimulates appetite. This should be the temperature in one area on the top of the cage and the rest should be in the 80’s. The rest of the cage should vary, and into the mid 70’s at the bottom. Panther’s should have a basking temperature around 90 degrees. Same goes for the cage having varying temperatures. Babies should always be cooler around 85 basking for both species. Remember nothing can compare to natural sunlight. The best time to put your chameleon outside is between 10 and 2 o’clock.

The Repti-sun 5.0 is THE recommended linear fluorescent tube for all old world chameleons.

ok thanks yes i do i have ordered items off that site before for my leopard gecko vivs and set ups etc.

I would use the repti sun 5.0.. but I think the repti glo 8.0 or 10.0 is almost the same.. check with guys on here... repti glo is cheaper. but the repti sun is proven..

i was told to use a 10.0 with a flexarium but is this also the case for an aluminium screen cage?

Repti-Sun 5.0 vs. Repti-Sun 10.0..Pros and Cons

Hi everybody,
I have been using the Zoo-Med 10.0 linear florescent light for my adult Veil.
There has been some controversy over using such a powerful light rather than just the usual 5.0 strenght light.
Please elaborate regarding the cons of using the 10.0 light. I don't mind changing to a 5.0 because it is a lot cheaper if there is really no benefit. I was lead to believe that the benefit of using the 10.0 light is that the lighting can penetrate thru 4 ft. vs only 1 ft from the roof of the cage. Correct??

Christine

be warned the 10.0 I tried put out a very blue light...kind of ugly in my opinion, though I think it was a reptiglo, but boths brands of 10.0 must put out a blu-ish tinted light. I quickly returned it and got a reptisun 5. The 5.0 is more of a natural white light, the box says it has a color temperature of 5500k, which is roughly equivalent to day/sun light.

good points made im still concerned about using a 10.0 with a flexarium though althoug everyone said its deffinately recomended

Electric is correct. Though most flourescent lamps are known to operate around 4500K or higher. The higher the Kelvin, the whiter and bluer the light will be which is probably why Electrics 10.0 was emitting a more bluer light than the more natural white you'll get from the 5.0 because of the different in Kelvin temperatures. For something no bigger than a 16" X 16" X 30" cage a 5.0 is more than likely going to do the job. but if you have a 24" X 24" X 48" I'm sure the 10.0 would be a much better bulb to go with. That way the UVB could penetrate further into the cage than the 5.0. I have a 16.5" X 16.5" 30" Reptarium. The ReptiSun 5.0 UVB works fine. I also use a 60W Incandescent bulb from Exo-Terra for basking. For the reptarium's I would suggest a 3rd bulb. The Exo-Terra Sun Glo Halogen for better visual. Mercury Vapour bulbs are great, too. The Exo-Terra Solor Glo, sold in 125W and 160W put out a little more UVB than the Reptisun 5.0, but also has good UVA, great Visual and Infrared. They are a little hard to find but work really well for providing good UVA which stimulates good eating and mating habbits for Cham's and allows for great lighting within the cage and makes for a better basking light than most bulbs. Hopefully this info will help you out. It can all be found here in Exo-Terra's magazine on Lighting.
