reworked Stanleys outdoor space....

the other prototype was a bit "unstable" with each side being a separate piece... so i redid it with corner PVC pieces.. making it a bit more rigid but more stable at the same time...
it's done with 3/4" PVC tubing and corners, "poultry fencing" from Lowes and lots and lots of hot glue!!! my fingertips may never be the same... :(

it is suspended under the pergola outside my den window so that i can keep an eye on Stanley if i need to step inside for a minute or two, and i dont have to worry about a cat or bird making off with him.....
i would NEVER leave him for long periods outside unattended, but at least this way he gets outside for some natural uvb and i feel he is in a safer environment..
i hand mist him for the most part when im out there buy i purchased a mister attachment for the hose when its hot enough to mist constantly.
the pergola is partially covered with lattice webbing and i will be adding more foliage to the enclosure and just lay some leaves on top so hell feel more secure....

here are a couple of pics......

this gives you an idea of the setup,,,, one day i'd like to screen in an end of the deck/pergola for a larger area for him....

thanks for looking,, lisa

very nice, i really like your idea

thanks Hoj,, i figured he'd be happier with more horizontal space to roam.. this keeps it up off of the ground and puts him up where he'd rather be!!!

the pvc makes it extremely weatherproof, no warping from outdoor exposure and pretty lightweight so i can set it up on my own.... ;)

plus, as i said, he's right outside my den/kitchen window so even if i go inside, i can keep an eye on him....

You might want to back the hot glue with some electrical ties just to be safe. Some plastics are very hard to glue anything to, like white buckets or anything made from high density polyethylene (HDPE) After a few weeks your hot glue might just pop right off easily from the plastic. Just keep checking it, because your cham might. I especially like your idea of converting one end of the pergola to a big cage, which means, of course, you are addicted :)

thanks for the insite chameleonoobie, i'll keep an eye on it in the coming weeks and i'll definitely add some zip ties to give added security to the enclosure....

oh i'm defiantly addicted!!!! i want one cham of each kind!!!!! ;)

Lisa I am liking that! Great idea having him high up like that!!!

thanks carol, my thoughts were to keep him away from ground predators and knowing that they feel safer up high, above everything else, he would be more relaxed and enjoy being outside when possible!!!
also any over head predators would have a hard time getting through the lattice on the top of the pergola and poultry netting of the enclosure to get at him...... ill never go off and leave him but this is far safer than just letting him sit in the top of a shrub with nothing between him and God.... ;)

I'm new to chams but have been doing construction for a few years now. If you take some sand paper ( 100 grit or 80 grit) and lightly sand the PVC that your going to hot glue to it should stick better. All the little scratches the sand paper will put on the PVC will give the hot glue some grip, kinda like sanding before you paint. Just a little tip ;)

thanks for the info, i'm past that point now but if i have to redo it i'll keep that helpful hint in mind, it definitely makes sense that it would stick better!

10/10 very cool!

Nice and high and must of been a bang for buck install. Awesome

yeah, i feel good about having it up high and i hope Stanley does as well! it was well worth the expense ( which was minimal) to have the peace of mind!!!!! lisa

That is very inspiring! I love the long shape of the enclosure and how it is suspended. I also love you deck/gazebo. Thank you for sharing!

thanks jon,,, i figured the height and the horizontal space would be more conducive to what Stanley would be seeking in the wild, making him more comfortable.
oh yeah, i love the deck/gazebo/pergola space also. i had it constructed within the first 6 months of moving in here 12 years ago!!!!!!! i have sooooo enjoyed it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks,, lisa
