RIP Waladii xx

Hi Everyone,

So of you may have seen my thread last week asking advice on a male veiled that had been available. I went to the place to check him out and see whether or not he was right for me and if I was ready after Ernie.

When I got there, it had happened to be the new Reptile Centre that will be opening soon. They have snakes, other lizards, frogs and spiders there which are all well looked after, and beside a few who are stressed from transportation, they are all relatively healthy.

When I enquire about the Veileds they had advertised, I was invited to have a look. What I saw was nothing like the picture posted that I share here on the forum. There were 3 juvenile/sub-adult females, one was shedding and one was bursting to lay eggs and she is extremely emaciated. The other was Waladii (it means "my boy" in Arabic). I know the minute I saw him I had to say something.

I told them that the way their chameleons are looking, they are going to die if vet treatment isn't sought after immediately.

To cut a really long story short.. I am not volunteering at this centre to help with the chameleons (50 more are due to arrive from Yemen next week!:().. and offered to foster Waladii and see if there was something I could do to offer him a chance and a little comfort. I knew when I saw him he only had a few days.

I now know I am not quite ready for a new baby of my own, but in the meantime, I can help some others before it becomes too late. This way I can still be around them and care for them.

RIP Waladii... you would have been such a gorgeous little man! xxx

Oh my, that is just terrible. He is obviously way dehydrated and looks to be pretty thin. Eyes closed, no foliage or anything to climb/hide in and glass enclosure that looks pretty dry and bare. So sad. :(

poor little guy -:( keep bugging them about the care - I know these ppl dont like me at this pet shop I started to "hang out" at - but ( I think in part to shut me up- :p ) they have now moved the chams from bird cages !! to nice set ups - I was SOOOOOOO happy when I went in and did not see a row of bird cages filled w/ chams- I was nice, but worse than a nat buzzing in their ear - ;)

Seems a shame that they are getting WC chams. There have got to be breeders of veileds around those parts, right? I understand that WC is sometimes the only way, but there seems to be enough captive bred veileds. Something you could inquire? I'm assuming the ones from Yemen are WC? Seems that it wasn't quite your time for a new friend yet, but you will know when it is right ;). RIP little Waladii! Sorry we did not really have a chance to get to know ya'! :(

It's always sad when people who should know better take such poor care of their animals.
I hope they change their care before the other 50 arrive
Poor Waladii.
Hopefully, a healthy cham will be offered to you when you are ready.

Poor Waladi! I am so glad, though, that he got to go to a good, loving home in his last days. You did the best you could for him. RIP Waladi.

Thank you guys :)

On another good note.. The 2 veiled girls are doing ok despite being on a diet of mealworms (still can't get crickets here) and being kept together in a glass enclosure less than 18x18x18!!!!!

They are eating and when I visit the centre for my volunteering shifts I try to take them out for a little while so I can check on them and give them some fresh air.

Fingers crossed they stay healthy!!
