i was wondering what everyone keeps their roaches in? thinking of starting a colony with 100. i have heard that alot of people keep them in a rubbermaid tub. what size would work best? also do you need to keep a light on them, and what temp do they need to be kept at? i will have some time to let them breed as my baby ambanjas should arrive on tuesday.

There are some good threads if you do a search. I'll give my .02 I keep mine in a 20 gallon long glass tank with a screen on top. I have a heating pad on one end with egg crate for the roaches to climb on. I put brown paper on the bottom of the cage and aluminum foil around the four sides. I keep a piece of shelf on top of the cage to keep light out, the last 5 or so inches are open so heat can escape. I keep the water crystals and food at the far end away from the heat. I find that the critters come out for food and water at night mostly. Last night there were so many nymphs on the carrots you couldn't even see any orange.

Here is a picture of my 10 gallon tank I had for a little bit.

Just imagine the tank being longer now and all the food and water at one end.

It really depends on the species but I'm guessing you're talking about Blaptica or Blaberus. A light is not necessary. Temps 70-85F. Most species breed faster at higher temps but are also prone to dessication with increased heat.

Don't start feeding the cham any roaches for at least 3-5 months otherwise you won' have enough roaches to breed with and you'll have to start your colony all over. They need time to breed and since chams can ea a lot, you will need as many adult roaches as possible to get this going

thanks guys. i will have a while to let them breed as my baby ambanja should be here tues or wed. i will probablt go with the rubbermaid tub with a heat pad under it. thanks again for the help!
