I was doing some reading on which substrate is best for roaches. I know there are tons of things to use and for now i'm using cypress mulch whch is fine but when i want to clean the cage it is next to impossible to get the babies out without going through alot of trouble. The roaches obviously like it i' having new babies almost everyday not. There was an article that was talking about going to the local Agway and getting a big bag of something. I think they might have said it was red, but i'm not sure. I lost the darn article. Any ideas?

as you said you will loose alot of babies i dont use substrate and i started off with about 50 and now have about 350 no substrate :)

It all depends on whether you want to just raise them and/or have them on display. I have a huge colony of hisser's and discoid's. My hisser colony has coconut fiber as a substrate (not too much) and for the discoid's I use dried oak leaves with cork bark stacked vertically like you use crating. It looks great and they thrive. I hope this helps.

ps. The cork bark and leaves make cleaning very easy
