Sad news at home, Pete died

My husband called me in Daytona to tell me my adult male veiled has died. He was healthy as far as I could tell. David said he was eating one night and dead on the floor. As I reviewed my husbandry, I find the only issue is my overfeeding. I had cut down on his food but I am sure the damage was done. I still have 2 panthers that I have also had for a long time. I am now wondering if I may have doomed both of them. I wonder if my cutting down on the food items over the past 6 or so months may have been too hard on them.

It is hard to lose a loved chameleon but even harder to know you may have caused it.

Im sorry for your loss Laurie. Its always hard to loose one of your chams. I think it was just his time don't be hard on yourself and blame yourself.

lauri, Keep in mind these are reptiles, and a sudden drop of food will happen even in the wild.

there could be all sorts of problems these animals could face and have adapted to in order to survive.

so a cut back in food.. i honestly don't think is what did him in.

it is always sad to loose one especially unexpected like that.

I am sorry for your loss Laurie,it is always hard to lose an animal you have loved and cared for, thinking off you at this time

sorry to hear about it Laurie a loss is always hard be it a pet or family member. It is something you care and love.

So sorry Laurie. I was wondering why I hadn't heard from you. :(

I agree with Sang. Lack of food, when done right has shown to prolong reptile lives. Less food, slower metabolic rate, less wear and tear on the body. If any thing, over feeding is far worse. It can cause several problems. Off the top of my head, fatty liver being one.

Laurie,

I am sorry for your loss. Dont tear yourself up about the feeding issue, Im sure something else contributed to his death. I had a very healthy and very very beautiful nosy mitsio that I just found dead one morning hanging from the branch. They can drop for no known reason sometimes. When you start to collect a nice little herd of chams, unfortunately, death can be a part of it. Best of wishes

Laurie; I am so sorry about Pete. It is always hard to loose one of our precious little friends. My heart goes out to you. You are an excellent cham mommy. I'm sure it was nothing that you had any control over. Jann

I am verry sorry to hear this, Laurie. We have all been there and can sure empathize with you. Easier said than done, but please don't beat yourself up. Things like this do happen even with the best husbandry possible. I have a vet that does necropsies for nothing. Maybe your vet would be willing to do the same? Just a thought.

So sorry to hear that! :( stay strong you have 2 other chams that love you! If you have the means, you should think about necropsy. I am not think there is any foul play in your husbandry, might be old age? might be some parasite? I def. dont think its food related, dont beat yourself up. There is a reason they have been alive for so long.

Very sorry to hear about your loss:( Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Take care and keep your chin up, It sounds like it was nature that called on him, not nurture.

Thanks to all of you, it helps just to have someone who inderstands how I feel. Not something my husband can understand even if he tries. And I have to keep telling him he did nothing wrong since it happened with hime taking care of my kids, instead of crying like I want to.

Sorry to hear this Laurie. I am fortunate enough have a piece of that special chameleon in my collection with El Dorado.

Call me anytime, and keep your head up.
